문인영화 <滾滾紅塵>의 서사적 전략

국문 초록

본 논문은 문인영화의 미학적 특성을 서사 구성과 인물 형상화를 중심으로 영화 <滾滾紅塵, Red Dust>(1991)의 고찰을 통해 살펴본 것이다. <滾滾紅塵>은 타이완의 여성 작가 싼마오가 각본을 쓴 작가 장아이링의 생애와 문학에 관한 문인영화이다. 문인영화는 전기 영화의 하부 장르로 세계영화사에 종종 등장해왔으며 특히 여성 작가에 대한 문인영화는 특정한 방향으로 여성 서사를 전개해 온 경향이 있었다. 전기적 인물에 대한 영화는 인물의 생애를 충실히 반영함과 허구적 상상력을 가미해 인물의 전기를 각색하는 양자의 방식을 조정하며 영화의 서사를 구현해왔는데 어느 방식을 강조하는가에 따라 전기물로서의 톤은 확연히 달라진다. 이러한 맥락에서 <滾滾紅塵>은 정직한 재현의 강박을 버리고 인물에 대해 자유롭게 써 내려간 이야기에 가깝다고 볼 수 있다. 영화는 장아이링의 생애와 그녀의 문학에 대한 역사적 사실 및 정치적 견해와 문화적 담론을 살피는 데 치중하기보다 인간 장아이링의 지극히 일상적이고 사적인 시간을 구현하려 노력했기 때문이다. 이에 여느 문인영화보다 인물 재현 방식에 있어 고유성을 지닌 <滾滾紅塵>은 대중에게 인물의 전기를 향한 중층적 차원의 사유의 장을 제공한다. 이 사유의 장에서 우리는 그간 장아이링이라는 한 인간을 둘러싼 담론들이 어떠한 배경과 목적에 의해 생성되었던 것인지에 대해 구체적으로 인식할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the aesthetic characteristics of literary films, around their narrative constitutions and characterization, by considering the film Red Dust(1991). The Red Dust is a literary film about the life and literature of the author Zhang Ailing, with its script written by San Mao, a female author. The literary film, a sub-genre of the biography film, has sometimes appeared in the global film history, especially, literary films about female authors have tended to develop females’ narratives into a certain direction. The films regarding biographic characters embody their narratives, by adjusting bilateral methods: 1) substantially reflecting the lives of characters; 2) adapting the biography of them, by additionally applying fictitious imaginations to them. The tone of the films as biographic ones may well be definitely varied, depending on which one is more emphasized. In this context, The Red Dust may seem to be similar to a story about the character, freely written without an obsession of honest reproduction, because the film made an effort to embody just daily and private time of Zhang Ailing, rather than focusing on reviewing the historical facts, politic opinions and cultural discourses in regard to her life and literature. The Red Dust which has its peculiarity in reproducing characters, compared to other literary films provides the public with a double-layered field of thought. In this field, we can specifically recognize the background and the objective by which the discourses around Zhang Ailing as a person have been produced, so the Red Dust may be determined as a reflective literary film embodying the cinematic aesthetics of the indirect speech.
