한중 저승 서사에 반영된 욕망과 치유

국문 초록

저승을 소재로 하는 이야기는 예나 지금이나 많은 사람이 관심을 가진다. 실재하는지 확인도 어려운 저승에 관심을 가지는 이유는 현실의 팍팍함, 억울함, 부조리에 힘들어하는 사람들이 저승이라는 ‘도구’를 통해 자신의 울분을 풀고, 욕망을 해소하며, 자신을 위안하고, 또 치유되길 바라서 일 것이다. 웹툰 《신과함께》를 보면 당시 어려움을 겪고 있는 사람들에게 위안과 치유를 주는 방식으로 서사가 진행된다. 인과응보와 권선징악이라는 주제는 話本小說과 같지만 그 접근 방법과 지향점은 다르다. 馮夢龍의 ‘三言’ 속에는 흥미로운 저승 이야기들이 수록되어 있다. 특히 《喩世明言》 제31권 <저승을 시끄럽게 하며 사마모가 재판을 하다[鬧陰司司馬貌斷獄]>(이후 <사마모>)와 제32권 <저승을 유람한 호모적이 시를 읊다[遊酆都胡母迪吟詩]>(이후 <호모적>) 두 작품은 저승과 관련해 서로 대비되는 흥미로운 이야기를 펼쳐내고 있다. 명말 출간된 풍몽룡의 ‘삼언’은 상업적으로 큰 성공을 거두었고, 이에 후대 등장하는 화본소설들은 그 형식과 내용을 따르게 된다. 네이버 웹툰으로 시작한 주호민의 《신과함께》도 상업적으로 대단한 성공을 거두며 영화로도 제작되어 1,000만이 넘는 관객이 관람하였다. 저승을 소재로 한 두 작품 모두 상업적으로 큰 성공을 거두었는데, 명말 중국에서 유행한 저승 이야기와 21세기 한국에서 흥행한 《신과함께》는 어떤 것이 같고, 또 달랐는지 알아본다. 이를 위해 이야기 탄생의 사회⋅문화적 배경, 작가, 독자층 등을 비교하고, 전혀 다른 시대와 사회 상황에서 어떻게 상업적인 성공을 거둘 수 있었는지도 살펴본다.

영문 초록

Many people are interested in stories about the underworld. The reason why people are interested in the underworld, which is difficult to check if it exists, is because they want people who struggle with reality’s toughness, injustice, and absurdity to relieve their anger, relieve their desires, comfort, and heal through the “tools” of the underworld. If you look at the webtoon Along with the Gods, the narrative proceeds in a way that comforts and heals those who are struggling at the time. The themes of causality and punishment of authority are the same as Huaben xiaoshuo, but their approach and orientation are slightly different. Feng Menglong’s ‘Sanyan’ contains interesting underworld stories. In particular, vol. 31 Make a noise to the underworld and Simamao goes on trial and vol.32 Humudi recites a poem after visiting the underworld, the two works in Yushimingyan tell interesting stories that contrast each other in relation to the underworld. Feng Menglong’s ‘Sanyan’, published at the end of the Ming Dynasty, was a great commercial success, and the later novels followed its form and content. Joo Homin’s Along with the Gods, which started as a Naver webtoon, was also produced as two movies with great commercial success and watched by more than 10 million audience. Both works on the subject of the underworld have been very successful commercially, and I find out what was the same and different between the underworld story that was popular in China at the end of the Ming Dynasty and Along with the Gods that was successful in Korea in the 21st century. To this end, I compare the social and cultural background of the birth of the story, writers, and readership, and examine how commercial success was achieved in completely different times and social situations.
