韓·中·日 고전문학 속에 보이는 여성과 의복

국문 초록

본 고는 한중일 고전문학 속 여성 의복의 이미지를 분석해 보고, 그 속에 반영된 당시의 여성관을 살펴보고자 한다. 삼국 모두 의복의 묘사를 통해서 각국의 미의식을 바탕으로, 자연과 조화로움을 추구했던 당시 여성들의 아름다움을 한껏 드러내고 있었으며, 또한 그러한 묘사가 여성의 신분과 지위를 표시하는 수단이 되기도 하였다. 때로는 사랑하는 사람에게는 여성 자신으로, 또한 여성 내면의 품성을 그대로 드러내는 비유로도 확장되기도 하였다. 나아가 제2의 나, 초월적 존재라는 상징성마저도 지니고 있었다. 하지만 한순간 옷을 바꿔 입는 것에 만족하지 않고, 자기 스스로 의상을 선택한 여성들에게 옷은 자유의 상징이 되었고, 이러한 도전은 여성들의 옷을 결정하려는 남성 중심의 봉건사회에 대한 해방으로 승화되었다. 비록 한중일 봉건적 가부장 사회가 여성의 의복에 관하여 강하게 규제하고 통제하는 면이 있었지만, 문학 작품 속 여성들의 의복은 때론 묘사로, 한편으론 비유로, 상징으로까지 화려하고 다채롭게 그려지고 있었다. 그리고 그 모든 것을 관통하는 본질은 그 시대 여성에게 의복은 ‘여성의 존재 그 자체’였다는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the images of women s clothes in the classical literature of Korea, China and Japan and examines how people viewed women in that era. Through detailed descriptions of clothes on the basis of their beauty standards, all three countries gave birth to the idea of beauty by women who pursued harmony with nature. These descriptions also stood for women s social position and status. Sometimes, their clothes metaphorically represented women themselves to their beloved ones and their personality traits. These clothes also symbolized another version of these female figures, as if they were supernatural beings. However, for a moment, clothes became a symbol of freedom for women who were not satisfied with changing clothes and chose their own clothes, and these challenges were sublimated as a liberation from the male-centered feudal society to determine women s clothes. In spite of the patriarchal nature of ancient East Asian society, highly restricting how women dressed, the clothes of women in literature were elegantly and colorfully portrayed with descriptions, metaphors and symbols. Ultimately, this way of depicting clothes addressed the central idea that what they wore could truly define who they were.
