『盎葉記』의 지식 정보 편집 양상과 그 저술 의식

국문 초록

이 글은 아정 이덕무(1741~1793)의 저서 『앙엽기』를 대상으로, 해당 저술에 수집된 다양한 지식 정보 활용 양상 및 그 저술 의식을 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『앙엽기』는 범칭 ‘소백과사전’이라 불리우는 이덕무의 저작으로, 그가 일생에 걸쳐 조금씩 모은 지식 정보의 묶음이다. 『앙엽기』는 이미 인지도가 높고 연구자의 활용이 빈번했던 저술이나, 실제 그 면목이 어떠한지는 상세히 논의된 바 없었다. 본론에서는 먼저 『앙엽기』 저술의 내용적 특징을 일괄하기 위해 임의로 그 내용을 주제별로 분류하였다. 그 결과 역사 인물･사적, 문물･제도･풍속, 글자･어휘 훈고, 천문･자연･현상, 단상･내면 술회, 기타의 여섯 분류로 나누어 볼 수 있었다. 이 여섯 가지 주제 분류를 관통하여 공통적으로 드러나는 『앙엽기』의 특징은, 첫째. 역대 한반도 국가의 역사･사적･문물･언어･풍속에 대한 관심과, 둘째. 당금의 문물･풍속･사건에 대한 관심이다. 다음으로 『앙엽기』에서는 두 가지로 대별되는 지식 정보의 교직 방식이 보이는데, 하나는 목록화 작업, 다른 하나는 고증학적 연구 방법이라 지칭할 수 있는 대조 및 검증 작업의 수행이다. 전자가 지식 정보의 양적 확충을 목적한다면, 후자는 지식 정보의 질적 확충을 목적으로 한다. 특히 이러한 방식들은 18세기 초반 『성호사설』로 대표되는 필기･유서류 저술에서, 19세기의 『오주연문장전산고』로 넘어가는 과도기적 흐름을 반영한다. 이상 『앙엽기』의 교직 방식을 통해서는 사소한 지식 정보까지 최대한 많이 집적하여, 그것을 전부 충실히 기록하겠다는 이덕무의 의식과, 근세의 서적을 통해 최신의 지식 정보를 얻고, 더 세련된 학술적 접근을 추구하는 경향 두 가지를 감지할 수 있다. 사소한 지식 정보의 망라와 ‘지금 여기’의 중시는 『앙엽기』 저술의 정체성이라 할 수 있으며, 사소한 지식을 확충하여 총괄하되 이를 세련된 지식 정보의 집체로 만들려 한 이덕무의 기민한 감각을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to examine the knowledge compilation and the author s consciousness in Angyeopgi(盎葉記) by Lee, Deok-mu (1741~1793). Angyeopgi is a work commonly called a ‘small encyclopedia’. This book is a bundle of knowledge collected by Lee during his lifetime. Angyeopgi was already well-recognized and used frequently by many researchers, but the actual aspect of 『A』 has not been discussed in detail. First of all, for the convenience of discussion, the contents of Angyeopgi are classified into 6 categories: historical figure and event, culture, system and customs, Vocabulary interpretation and etymology, astronomy and natural phenomena, fragmentary thought and inner confession, Others. There are two characteristics of Angyeopgi that penetrates these six categories. First, It is an interest in the history, historical sites, culture, language, and customs of countries established on the Korean Peninsula from the past to the present. Second, It is an Interest in contemporary culture, customs, and events. In other words, it is about the contemporary Joseon where Lee Deok-mu lived. On the one hand, in Angyeopgi, two different types of methods of using knowledge information are observed. First, cataloging or listing, and second, collation and validation, which can be referred to as ascertaining something to be true through philological research. While the former is related to the quantitative expansion of knowledge information, the latter is related to the qualitative expansion of knowledge information. In particular, these two methods reflect a literary transformation of the biji(筆記) or leishu(類書) genre in the late 18th century, between the appearance of Seonghosaseol (星湖僿說) and OjuyeonmunjangJeonsango(五洲衍文長箋散稿). There are two things to note from all of the above: the author s intention of accumulating trivial knowledge information as much as possible and recording it faithfully, and his tendency to obtain the latest knowledge information through the latest books and to pursue a more sophisticated academic approach in Angyeopgi. In conclusion, these two are the core of the writing of Angyeopgi. And this is related to Lee s keen literary sense.
