국문 초록

1990년대로 진입하면서 여성작가들의 소설에서 여성문제가 중심 주제로 부각되기 시작했다. 이러한 변화는 앞선 시대에 재현되지 못한 현실의 문제를 다룬다는 점에서 의의가 인정되었으나 그 재현 방식에 대하여는 첨예하게 문제가 제기되었다. 김인숙의 『칼날과 사랑』(1993)에 대한 논평에서 특히 논점이 된 것은 여성 인물의 심리에 천착하여 여성문제를 다루면서 발생하는 효과였다. 이 같은 소설적 방법은 여성문제를 성별갈등으로 환원하며 남성을 타자화한다는 점에서 비판되었던바, 이 점이 유독 문제시되었던 것은 그것이 동시기 여성작가들의 소설에서 두드러지는 경향이었기 때문이다. 그중에서도 김인숙은 앞선 시기 리얼리즘 진영에서 성취를 인정받아온 작가였다는 이유로 특별한 우려의 대상이 되었다. 이렇듯 여성작가들의 계보에서 구별된 위치를 부여받았던 김인숙이 그로부터 이탈하여 다른 여성작가들과 한자리에서 만나고 있다는 사실은 여성문제의 재현 방법을 둘러싼 당시의 화두에 있어 김인숙이라는 작가의 답변을 주목하게 만든다. 트러블은 공동체의 안정을 방해하므로 외부화되지만 그것은 곧 그 트러블이 전적으로 외부화될 수 없는 내부의 문제임을 뜻하는 것이기도 하다. 1990년대 초반 여성작가들의 문학이 문제적으로 변별되고 있었던 것 역시 이들 작가의 작품이 여성들만의 문제로 분리 배치될 수 없는 근본적 문제를 제기하고 있었기 때문이다. 그 트러블의 내부를 들여다보기 위해 이 글은 『칼날과 사랑』의 수록작들을 검토했다. 기존의 연구들이 386세대 여성작가로서 김인숙 소설이 현실을 어떻게 다르게 재현하고 있었는지를 주로 논구해 왔다면, 본고는 그러한 재현이 문학장에서 트러블로 배치되었던 맥락과 그것의 함의로 초점을 옮겨보았다. 본고가 분석하는 소설들은 여성들이 겪는 문제에 대한 이야기일 뿐 아니라 그 문제들과 더불어 여성들 자신이 하나의 트러블이 되어가는 이야기이기도 하다. 김인숙의 『칼날과 사랑』은 이렇게 트러블로 배치되면서도 그러한 배치 속에서 다시 트러블을 일으키며 배치 자체를 흔들고자 한 문학적 수행이라는 점에 그 의미가 있다.

영문 초록

In the 1990s, women’s issues began to emerge as a central theme in literature produced by women. On one hand, the foray into the new field was seen as important, whereas on the other hand, the methodology adopted often became a topic of contention. Critics who have written on Kim Insuk s Blade and Love(1993) talked about how the author portrayed women’s issues by exploring the psychology of female characters. The novel was criticized for depicting women’s issues as a conflict between the (‘two’) sexes and for otherizing men. Although such themes were commonly found in the writings of the women writers at the time, Kim Insuk’s works became an object of scrutiny because her earlier works had been regarded as part of realism literature. In other words, Kim, who had thus far occupied a distinct position in the genealogy of female writers, had changed her literary character and begun to inhibit a writing style similar to other female writers. This change cast a new light on the debate surrounding the representation of women’s issues and Kim’s position within that discourse. Conflict, or ‘trouble’ is often externalized because it interferes with society’s stability. But this very externalization points to the fact that trouble is an internal condition that cannot be entirely externalized. Women’s literature from the early 1990s caused a furor, or ‘trouble’ because the problems they depicted could not be neatly categorized as only ‘women’s issues.’ This paper is concerned with examining the concept of ‘trouble’ present in Kim’s novel Blade and Love. While the existing discourse has been focused on how Kim, despite being part of the ‘386-generation’ portrayed reality differently, I seek to focus on the context in which such representation took place and was perceived as ‘trouble,’ and the implications of such a perception. The works of fiction analyzed in this paper are not only stories which focus on women’s problems, but stories where women are depicted as becoming a ‘problem’ themselves. The novel is meaningful in the way that, despite being posited as an instrument of ‘trouble,’ it is devoted to creating a literary practice that stirs up ‘trouble’ to fracture such a positioning itself.
