국문 초록

본 글은 동시대의 생태 미술이 과거 생태 미술과 비교해 자연을 인식하는 방식에 변화를 보이고 있음을 주장하고 이러한 변화의 주요 원인으로 인류세(Anthropocene)에 주목한다. 지구온난화로 대표되는 오늘날 우리 사회의 위기적 상황은 인류세가 낳은 현상 중 하나로, 현재 많은 과학자들은 지구가 인류세라는 새로운 지질 시대로 진입했음을 주장하고 있다. 인류세는 인간이 지구 시스템을 방해할 정도 막강한 힘을 가지게 된 시대로 인류세에서 인간은 환경 파괴의 주범으로 지목된다. 그러나 인류세에서 강조되어야 할 것은 지난 생태 미술에서 반복해 온 인간중심주의에 대한 반성이 아니라 지구 물질의 ‘지질학적 변화’이다. 인류세의 진정한 의미는 과거 지구와는 물리적으로 완전히 다른 지구에서 인간이 살고 있다는 것이며 동시대 생태 미술의 변화 양상에 대해서도 기존의 윤리적·관계적 접근이 아닌 과학적 차원에서 접근할 것이 요구된다. 따라서 본 글은 인류세가 가져온 미술의 변화를 지질학적 관점에서 살피고 동시대 생태 미술에서 초월적이고 추상화된 ‘자연’의 개념은 약해지고 물질로 이루어진 행성 ‘지구’로 인식이 전환되고 있음을 확인하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper claims that, in comparison to previous ecological art, contemporary ecological art shows a shift in how nature is perceived, and that the Anthropocene is the primary cause of this shift. One of the phenomena caused by the Anthropocene is today s crisis situation in our society, which is represented by global warming, and many scientists now say that the Earth has entered a new geological era known as the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene is the era in which humans have grown powerful enough to interfere with the Earth System, and humans are blamed for much of the Anthropocene s environmental degradation. What should be highlighted in the Anthropocene, however, is a geological turn in Earth s substance, not a reflection on anthropocentrism as has been done in previous ecological art. The fundamental meaning of the Anthropocene is that humans now live on a very different Earth than they did in the past, and changes in contemporary ecological art must be treated scientifically rather than ethically and relationally. As a result, this paper investigates the Anthropocene s impact on art from a geological standpoint, concluding that the transcendent and abstracted concept of nature in contemporary ecological art is fading, and the sense of the planet Earth formed of matter is evolving.
