국문 초록

본고는 국가무형문화재 제80호 자수장 최유현 보유자를 대상으로 그녀의 생애와 대표작을 분석하고, 전통자수를 새롭게 혁신하였던 작가의 작품세계를 밝혀 보았다. 그동안 자수에 대해서는 조선시대의 현존 유물이나 근대기 일본에서 유학했던 여성 자수작가를 연구한 논문이 몇 편 있을 뿐이며, 국가나 시도에서 무형문화재로 지정하여 보호하는 전통 자수 장인이나 그들의 작품 연구는 거의 없었다. 이에 1951년 자수에 입문하여 2021년 현재까지 70년간 활동한 최유현의 생애를 5시기로 구분하였다. 1기는 스승을 만난 10대 입문기, 2기는 자수학원을 설립하여 수본을 창안한 20대 성장기, 3기는 부산민예사를 세워 유물을 토대로 회화적 성격이 가미된 자수를 수놓은 3-40대 발전기, 4기는 불화를 수본으로 삼아 자수를 제작한 50대 확장기, 5기는 불교자수라는 장르적인 확장성까지 보여준 60대 이후 절정기를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 최유현은 각 시기마다 수본이나 도상 및 표현기법 등에서 전통자수를 혁신시키고, 실용적인 자수 대신 주제의식이 뚜렷한 불교자수를 제작하여 전통장인이면서도 작가정신과 조형세계를 발현시켜 한국 현대 섬유미술사에서 뚜렷한 위치를 차지하였음을 밝혀 보았다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to clarify the artist s world of works by analyzing her life and representative works for Choi Yoo-hyun, the holder of National Intangible Cultural Property No. 80. Until now, studies on embroidery have only been conducted on relics of the Joseon Dynasty or female artists studying in Japan in the modern era, and few studies have been conducted on traditional embroidery craftsmen or their works, including national intangible cultural properties. Accordingly, this paper classified the life of Choi Yoo-hyun, who entered embroidery in 1951 and worked for 70 years, into five periods. In her teens, she met her teacher and started embroidery, and in her 20s, she established an embroidery school to create embroidery designs and grow up. In her 30s and 40s, she developed by embroidering pictorial embroidery based on relics, and in her 50s, she expanded her area by producing embroidery based on Buddhist paintings. After her 60s, she reached her peak with Buddhist embroidery. As such, Choi Yu-hyeon innovated the form, color, and expression techniques on the basis of tradition at each period, and developed from practical embroidery to appreciation embroidery to Buddhist embroidery with clear religious faith. It was revealed that it has occupied a distinct position in the history of modern textile art in Korea by demonstrating formability with the artist spirit without following the traditional embroidery field.
