국문 초록

평안남도 순천의 천왕지신총은 무덤칸에 목조가옥의 뼈대에 해당하는 보와 소슬, 소로 등을 나타내면서 실물과 그림이 어우러지게 배치한 특이한 구조를 보여주는 유적이다. 널방 벽을 사방연속 연꽃귀갑문으로 장식하고 그 위에 무덤주인의 생활 장면을 그린 점에서도 고구려 남북의 다른 고분벽화들과 다르다. 천장고임에는 천왕과 지신, 상금서수와 선인을 그렸는데, 체계적으로 8칸의 ‘人’자 소슬 사이 공간에 배치함으로써 무덤주인의 소망이 불교의 낙원인 듯 보이나, 실제 내용은 선계에 가깝다는 사실을 잘 드러냈다. 순천은 평양에 가깝지만, 고구려의 옛 서울 국내성과 새 수도 평양을 잇는 교통로에있다. 순천에서 발견된 요동성총이 무덤구조상 요양 위ㆍ진 벽화고분과 평양권 벽화고분인 남포의 태성리3호분, 안악의 안악3호분을 잇는 벽화고분이듯이 천왕지신총도 무덤구조와 벽화 구성에서 북의 국내성과 남의 평양 사이에 있다. 국내성 지역의 문화와 평양의 문화가 순천에서 만나 섞였음을 천왕지신총이 보여준다고 할 수 있다. 천왕지신총 널방 벽에 그려진 사방연속 연꽃귀갑문은 연꽃 장식이 유행했던 북의 국내성 지역에서 내려온 문화 요소이다. 천왕지신총은 이런 연꽃 장식 문화가 순천을 거쳐평양에 전해졌음을 보여준다. 안악1호분과 덕흥리벽화분에 보이는 상금서수와 선인 표현은 순천을 거쳐 북의 국내성 지역에 전해졌다. 천왕지신총 널방 천장고임에 천왕과 지신, 상금서수와 선인이 체계적으로 묘사된 것은 이런 문화 요소 전파의 중간 단계를 보여준다고 할 수 있다. 순천이 문화 전통이 다른 고구려 남북의 두 문화가 만나 문화 혼합이 이루어지는 곳이었다는 사실이 천왕지신총을 통해 확인된다.

영문 초록

Cheonwangjisinchong Tomb of Suncheon, Pyeongannam-do, is a unique site where the tomb mimics a wooden house with crossbeams, frames, and stands appear with the paintings blending into the structure. That the casket chamber is decorated with lotus grid motifs on top of which is depicted a slice of life scene of the deceased also sets it apart from other tomb murals north and south of Koguryo. On the corners of the ceilings are painted cheonwang (heavenly king 天王), jisin (earthly deity 地神), auspicious animals (祥禽瑞獸), and immortals (仙人). They are placed in the eight spaces between the 人 shaped frame. The motifs suggest that while the deceased seems to hope for a Buddhist paradise, its actual details resemble more of the land of the immortals. In closer distance to Pyeongyang, Suncheon is on the road that connects Guknaeseong, Koguryo’s old capital, and Pyeongyang. Yodongseongchong Tomb, another tomb found in Suncheon, structurally resemble mural tombs of Wei and Jin. It is an inheritor of the tradition that includes Taeseong-ri Tomb No. 3 of Pyeongyang area and Anak Tomb No. 3 of Anak. Likewise, Cheonwangjisinchong Tomb structurally and thematically stands in between the traditions of northern Guknaeseong and southern Pyeongyang. In other words, Cheonwangjisinchong Tomb suggests that Guknaeseong culture and Pyeongyang culture mingled and fused right in Suncheon. The lotus grid motifs that adorn the casket room of Cheonwangjisinchong Tomb is part of a northern tradition from Guknaeseong area where such lotus motifs were popular. Cheonwangjisinchong Tomb shows that such painting tradition may have went through Suncheon down south to Pyeongyang. On the other hand, the auspicious animals and the immortal motifs seen in Anak Tomb No. 1 and Deokheung-ri Mural Tomb traveled through Suncheon up north to Guknaeseong. The systematically placed motifs of cheonwang, Jisin, auspicious animals, and immortal on the ceiling corners of Cheonwangjisinchong Tomb shows such cultural transmission in progress. Cheonwangjisinchong Tomb shows that Suncheon served as a bridge between the distinct cultures of north and south Koguryo.
