국문 초록

병산서원은 西厓 柳成龍과 그의 셋째 아들 柳袗의 위패를 모시고 두 분의 학문과 업적을 기리기 위해 세워졌다. 이곳은 서원으로서 추모의 공간일 뿐만 아니라 『退溪集』을 교정하는 큰 성과를 이룬 장소이며, 지역 유림들의 교류에 주도적인 역할을 한 곳이기도 하다. 이에 본고에서는 “병산서원의 역할과 위상”이라는 주제를 ‘추모의 공간’, ‘ 퇴계집 의 교정처’, ‘지역 유림의 표상’이라는 소제로 나누어 살펴보았다. 먼저 ‘추모의 공간’에서는 서애가 領議政에 승진하여 국난을 극복하기까지 30년 동안 오로지 국가와 민족을 보위하기 위해 분골쇄신한 것을 점검하고, 이를 추모한 鄭經世의 奉安文을 다루었다. 그는 봉안문에서 屛山이 중국 福建省 崇安縣에 있는 산으로, 주자를 가르쳤던 劉子翬가 살았던 곳이며 주자를 모신 서원과 연루되어 있음을 밝혔다. 뒤이어 1662년에 병산서원에 추가로 從享된 서애의 셋째 아들 柳袗의 행장과 修巖奉安文을 살펴보았다. 유진과 관련된 두 편의 글은 모두 洪汝河가 지은 것으로, 그는 유진이서애의 가르침을 받은 사실을 공자가 아들 鯉에게 가르친 過庭과 관련지었다. 끝으로 東厓 李浹이 병산서원의 운영에 대해 기록한 『屛山書院記事』를 소개하였다. 다음으로 ‘『退溪集』의 교정처’에서는 서애가 병산서원의 전신인 병산서당에서 그와 동문수학한 趙穆, 金誠一, 南致利 및 李好閔과 합심하여 『退溪集』과 『退溪先生年譜』의 교정에 주도적인 역할을 한 것을 고구하였다. 마지막으로 ‘지역 유림의 표상’에서는 영남 이학파의 중추적 인물인 大山李象靖이 1775년에 병산서원의 원장에게 서원을 대표하여 쓴 쟁변의 글과, 全相元이 그의 선조 四友堂 全纘이 퇴계 선생에게 받은 두 수의 절구시를 두고 그 소유를 증명하기 위해 저술한 『淸遠亭考證』을 살펴보았다. 이러한 자료들을 통해 병산서원이 지역사회에서 얼마나 막중한 위치에 있었는지를 가늠할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Byeongsan Seowon was established to serve the ancestral tablets of Ryu Seongryong and his third son Ryu jin and honor their study and achievements. As a Confucian academy, it was a place of remembrance, as well as a place of great achievement in correcting the Toegyejip, and also played a leading role in the exchange of local Confucian scholars. Accordingly, the theme of “The Role and Status of Byeongsan seowon” was divided into ‘The Space of Remembrance’, ‘The Correctional Place of Toegyejip’ and ‘The Representation of Local Confucian scholars’. First of all, In ‘The Space of Remembrance’, it was examined that Seoae fagged himself to death only to protect the nation and the people for 30 years after he was promoted to prime minister and overcame the national crisis, and dealt with the memorial of Jeong Gyeongse. In the memorial, he revealed that Byeongsan was a mountain in Soongan County, Bokgeon Province, China, where Liu Jahui, who taught Zuja, lived and was involved in the Confucian academy that served Zuja. And Ryu jin s Hangjang and Suambonganmun were examined which were added to Byeongsan Seowon in 1662. Both writings related to Ryu jin were written by Hong Yeo-ha, and he related the fact that Ryu jin was taught by Seoae to Confucius son Lee. Finally, ByeongsanSeowongisa, which Dongae Yihyeop recorded about the operation of Byeongsan Seowon, was introduced. Next, ‘The Correctional Place of Toegyejip’ considered that Seoae played a leading role in the correction of Toegyejip and Toegye’s annals by working with Jo Mok, Kim Seongil, Nam Chiri, and Lee Homin, who studied with him at Byeongsan Seodang, the predecessor of Byeongsan Seowon. Finally, in ‘The Representation of Local Confucian scholars’, it was examined that Daesan Yi Sangjeong, a pivotal figure in the Yihak faction of Yeongnam, wrote a controversial text on behalf of Seowon in 1775, and Jeon Sangwon wrote Cheongwonjeonggojeung to prove his possession of verses received by Jeon Chan, his ancestors, from Toegye. These data show how important Byeongsan Seowon was in the community.
