국문 초록

도산서원은 이황을 제향하는 대표적인 서원이자, 퇴계학의 本山으로서 건립 이래로 높은 위상을 가지고 있었다. 하지만 17세기까지 향촌사회의 영향력은 예안지역으로 제한되었다. 18세기에는 퇴계에 대한 국왕의 관심이 커지면서 致祭와 서적의 頒賜가 이어졌다. 이에 갑술환국 이후 정치권에서 물러났던 영남의 남인들은 퇴계의 권위를 내세워 노론 정권에 대응하는 가운데 도산서원의 위상도 재정립되었다. 도산서원 측은 원장의 선발 범위를 도내로 확장하여, 품관 이상의 자격을 갖춘 명망있는 인사를 선발함으로써 서원의 외부지원 세력을 늘려갔다. 아울러 정치·사회적 현안에 대해서도 적극적으로 관여함으로써 영남 전역으로 영향력을 확장시켰다. 그러나 책무도 함께 커지면서, 이에 비례하여 원임의 업무와 부담도 증대되어 갔다. 그 결과 원임의 잦은 교체와 선발의 어려움이 노정되면서, 서원 운영에 후손들의 참여가 확대 되었다. 19세기에도 도산서원의 대외적 위상은 큰 변화가 없었다. 그러나 내부적으로 서원 운영을 담당하였던 院儒들의 이탈과 그로인한 운영 악화로 지방관의 원장 참여가 나타났다. 또한 『퇴계집』 중간을 위한 비용 마련에도 이전과 달리 어려움을 겪는 등 위상이 약화되는 조짐이 나타나고 있었다. 진성이씨가 중심이 되어 운영되던 도산서원은 19세기 후반 대원군의 원사 훼철령이 시행될 당시 적극적인 대응을 자제하면서 도내의 영향력이 약화되었다. 이후 왕명으로 미훼철 서원의 원장에 지방관이 임명되면서 사족들의 서원 자치권은 더욱 축소되었다. 그런 가운데 관권의 개입으로 원임직에 庶派들이 허통되면서 도산서원의 영향력은 더욱 약화되었다. 그 상징적 사건이 퇴계 위판 도난 사건이었다. 그러나 이 사건은 국왕과 관찰사가 주목할 만큼 여전히 높은 퇴계의 위상을 반증하는 것이기도 했다. 이런 분위기 속에서 도산서원 운영을 주도해온 진성이씨는 『도산제현급문록』 간행을 통해 퇴계와 도산서원의 위상을 제고하고자 했다. 그러나 공론이 결여된 무리한 추진으로 오히려 문인 가문들과 분쟁이 발생하면서 그 취지는 퇴색되었다. 일제강점기에도 서원 운영을 둘러싼 각종 분쟁이 발생하고, 퇴계의 諱字를 直書한 문제로 안동권·영천이씨와 시비가 발생하였다. 특히 영천이씨와는 퇴계의 학문연원 시비로 확대 되었다. 이처럼 퇴계와 도산서원의 위상은 19세기 중반이후 급속히 약화되었으며, 이를 제고하려는 퇴계 후손들의 노력이 이어졌지만 오히려 각종 시비의 중심에 서게 되었다.

영문 초록

Dosan Seowon is dedicated to a representative scholar Yi Hwang of the Joseon Dynasty, and has had a high status since its establishment as the main station of Toegye-hak. However, the influence in the village society was limited to the Ye-an area until the 17th century. However, in the 18th century, as the king s interest in Toegye grew, the ritual of the Sangdeoksa Shrine(致祭) and books were continued. Accordingly, the status of Dosan Seowon was reestablished while the South Koreans in Yeongnam, who had retired from the political world after the sudden return of the country, responded to the Noron regime with the authority of Toegye. Dosan Seowon s side expanded the selection range of directors to the province, and expanded Seowon s external support forces by selecting prestigious personnel with qualifications beyond Pum-gwan(品官). In addition, it expanded its influence throughout Yeongnam by actively engaging in political and social issues. On the other hand, as the influence increased, the responsibility increased, and the duties and burdens of the director increased. As a result, the participation of descendants in the operation of the vow increased due to frequent replacement of the director and the difficulty of selection. Even in the 19th century, the external status of Dosan Seowon did not change much. However, due to the departure of the masters who were in charge of the operation of the seowon internally and the deterioration of the operation, the participation of the director of the local government appeared. In addition, there were signs that the status of the book was weakening, such as having difficulties in raising the cost of publishing 『Toegyejip』. The Dosan Seowon, which was run by the Jinseong clan, had its influence in the province weakened as they refrained from taking an active response when Daewongun s decree to abolish the original teachers was enforced in the late 19th century. Afterwards, by the king s order, a local official was appointed as the director of Mihuechul Seowon, and the autonomy of the seowon was further reduced. Meanwhile, the influence of the Dosanseowon was further weakened as the communication with the senior officers was implemented through the intervention of government authorities. The symbolic incident was the theft of Toegye s top plate in the Sangdeoksa(尙德祠). However, this incident also disproved the status of Toegye, which was still high enough to be noted by the king and the observer. In the 20th century, Mr. Jin Seong, who led the operation of Dosan Seowon, tried to enhance the status of Toegye and Dosan Seowon through the publication of 『Dosanjehyeongeummunrok』. However, as a result of unreasonable promotion lacking public opinion, disputes with literary families arose, and the purpose was overshadowed. During the Japanese colonial period, various disputes arose over the operation of Dosan Seowon, and disputes with Andong-gwon and Yeongcheon-i occurred due to the problem of writing the text of Toegye. In particular, the dispute between the Yeongcheon Lee clan and Toegye s academic research institute expanded. As such, the status of Toegye and Dosan Seowon rapidly weakened after the mid-19th century, and although efforts by the descendants of Toegye continued to improve it, they rather stood at the center of various disputes.
