카카오 톡을 활용한 토익 스피킹 수업에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 다수의 학습자가 사용하는 카카오 톡의 세 가지 주요 기능을 토익 스피킹 수업에 활용하고 그 효과와 학습자들의 평가를 알아보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 일주일에 2시간씩 총 15주 동안 진행되는 토익 스피킹 강좌를 수강하는 총 9명의 학생이 참여하였다. 카카오 톡에 오픈 채팅방을 개설하여 토익 스피킹의 사진 묘사하기, 설문 조사 응답하기, 의견 제시하기 활동을 수행하였다. 활동에 이용된 기능은 사진 전송, 문자 채팅, 음성 녹음 기능이었다. 활동의 효과는 사전/사후시험을 시행하여 대응표본 t검정으로 분석하였으며, 학생들의 의견을 들어보기 위해 설문조사과 자유 토론을 진행하였다. 연구결과에 따르면 학습자들의 토익 스피킹 성적은 통계적으로 유의미한 결과는 나오지 않았으나 전제 학생 모두 성적이 향상되어 토익 스피킹 레벨이 상승하였다. 또한, 카카오 톡의 세 가지 기능을 사용한 활동도 모두 성적이 향상되었다. 학습자들의 설문 조사에 따르면 사진/문자 전송 활동이 가장 효과적이었다는 답이 압도적으로 우세했다. 학습자들은 음성 녹음 기능이 가장 효과가 낮다고 대답하였으나 실제로 음성 녹음을 활용한 활동의 성적이 가장 많이 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 전체적으로 모든 학습자가 카카오 톡을 수업에 활용한 부분에 대해 매우 긍정적이라고 응답했다. 본 연구를 통해 카카오 톡이 영어 교육에 잠재적으로 중요한 도구임을 시사하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the effects of Kakao Talk, which is used by a majority of learners today, on TOEIC Speaking, along with the feedback of the learners to the activities using the main functions of this popular SNS app. Nine university students, whose majors and grades varied, participated in this study. The study was implemented for the subject of TOEIC Speaking, and the class proceeded with 2 hours over the course of 15 weeks. The researcher provided a Kakao open chatting room, wherein the students could take part in all of the activities with their classmates. Three main Kakao Talk functions were used: taking photos, text messaging, and voice recordings. To reveal the effects of these activities, three phases of TOEIC Speaking were selected: Describing a Picture, Responding to Questions, and Expressing an Opinion. Two tests, and a pretest and a posttest, were conducted, and the paired t-test was used to analyze the results of this study. To investigate the learners’ feedback regarding the activities themselves, an open-answered survey and a class discussion were followed. The results of the research showed that all of the learners’ test scores increased, and all of their levels were upgraded, even though this did not equate with any statistical significance. Among the three activities, the learners selected the activity of taking photos and sending them as the most effective one. Nevertheless, all of the learners regarded all of the Kakao Talk activities as useful. Thus, this study suggests that Kakao Talk has the potential to serve as a crucial tool in English education.
