국문 초록

본 연구는 인천대학교에서 미국 세인트 존스 대학의 세미나 수업 모델을 활용하여 개발한 INU Great Books (GB) 교양 세미나 수업의 효과를 분석함으로써 고전 텍스트를 읽고 토의하는 교과목 개발 및 운영에 대한 시사점을 제시하고 개선 방안을 도출하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2020년 1학기에 인천대학교에 개설된 GB 교양 세미나 3개의 강좌를 수강한 전체 60명의 학생들과 2학기에 GB 교양 세미나 3개 강좌를 수강한 전체 60명 학생들을 대상으로 하여 비판적 사고력, 의사소통능력, 토론 효능감 (개인, 집단), 대학 소속감 및 적응, 자기 주도적 학습 및 토론 수업 만족도를 측정하였다. 또한, 1학기 GB 교양 세미나에 참여한 학생 중 7명의 학생을 대상으로 초점집단인터뷰를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 2020년 1학기 GB 교양 세미나 수업을 수강한 학생들은 개인 및 집단 토론 효능감, 자기주도적 학습, 학교 소속감과 적응에서 통계적으로 유의미하게 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 2020년 2학기에 GB 교양 세미나 수업을 수강한 학생들은 비판적 사고력, 자기주도적 학습에서 통계적으로 유의미한 변화를 보였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 한국의 대학생들을 대상으로 한 세미나식 수업 운영에 관한 시사점을 도출하고, 향후 개선 방안에 대하여 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study investigates and offers ways to improve the development and operation of seminar classes for reading and discussing classical texts by evaluating the effectiveness of the INU (Incheon National University) Great Books (GB) program. This program adapted and utilized the discussion methods widely used in seminars at St. John’s College. We selected 60 students in the first semester and 60 students in the second semester who took GB classes offered in 2020 at INU, and then assessed their critical thinking skills, communication skills, (with both individuals and within groups), discussion efficacy, sense of belonging and degree of adaptability, self-directed learning, and learning satisfaction with discussion. We also selected 7 students out of the 60 students and conducted focus group interviews with them. The analysis results are as follows: first, the students who took GB seminars in the first semester of 2020 showed a significant improvement in terms of their group discussion efficacy, self-directed learning, and a sense of belonging and a degree of adaptability; second, the students who took GB seminars in the second semester of 2020 showed a significant change in their critical thinking skills and self-directed learning. Based on the results of this study, we further examined the implications of future discussion-based seminars for Korean college students, and also looked at various improvement plans for this program.
