대학의 일반생물학 수업에서 인간 진화의 내용과 의미

국문 초록

일반생물학 성격의 교과에서 인간 진화 수업이 나타내는 시사점과 한계를 탐색하기 위한 시도로서 여러 일반생물학 교재가 다루고 있는 인간 진화에 대한 조사와 분석을 진행하였다. 일반생물학 교재들은 매우 다양한 생물 종류들 사이에서 인간이 차지하는 위치를 나타냈다. 즉, 여러 가지 예를 통해 생물의 한 구성원으로 인간은 다른 생물들과 같은 특징을 지니고 있음을 나타내고 있다. 500~600여 년 전부터 일어난 인간 진화의 특징은 직립보행, 뇌 용적의 증가, 도구의 사용 등으로 요약되었다. 일반생물학 교재에는 또 매 단원마다 인간에 대한 일정 정도의 내용이 포함되어 있고 이 내용의 진화적 특징들은 분자에서 생태계에 이르는 여러 수준으로 정리하여 볼 수 있다. 다른 생물과의 비교와 함께, 가장 인간과 가까운 침팬지와의 비교는 인간만의 특징은 생물학적인 측면뿐 아니라 문화적인 측면의 중요성을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 연구를 통해 일반생물학 수업에서 강조되어야 할 점은 첫째, 인간 진화는 다른 생물들과 진화과정이 비슷하게 진행되었고 현재도 진행되고 있으며, 둘째, 침팬지 등 현존하는 유인원이 인류의 조상이 아니며 셋째, 진화는 현 인간을 향해 진행되는 것이 아니고 넷째, 인간 진화에서 문화는 중요한 요소임을 알 수 있었다. 특히 문화와 인간 진화의 관련성은 인문학 또는 사회과학과의 접점을 제공할 수 있는 주제라고 볼 수 있는데 일반생물학 수업에서는 이에 대한 내용은 물론 관점은 매우 부족한 편이다. 따라서 교강사들은 인간 진화를 소재로 하여 인문학과 사회과학의 접점으로 작용할 수 있는 문화와의 관련성에 대한 관점을 이해하고 일반생물학에서 제공되는 해당 예들에 대한 의식적인 접근이 필요한 것으로 판단된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to unravel the implications and limits of the contents pertaining to human evolution at the level of general biology courses. Five textbooks for general biology courses were analyzed. All books describe human beings in the context of phylogenetic systematics, indicating that human beings, along with all other organisms, are also descendant from a common ancestor. Many examples found in these books indicate that human beings are members of living things, meaning that human beings share certain common features with all living things on earth. Based on various facts contained in these books, three points can be noted as follows: First, these books mentioned three common features, which are found in chapters on human evolution. These are walking upright, an increase in brain volume, and the use of tools. Second, these books showed evolutionary aspects of human beings in every chapter. So it is even possible to arrange examples from the molecular up to the ecosystem level. Third, many features of human beings can be compared to those of chimpanzees in order to distinguish our own evolutionary features. As a result, one of important aspects of human evolution seems to be related to, or at least is partially dependant upon, human culture. Based on these analyses, four points should be stressed in general biology class when it comes to human evolution. First, human evolution seems not to be a special kind of process, but a typical one, and one that is on-going. Second, apes (including chimpanzees) are not the ancestors of human beings, and therefore thirdly, this means, for example, that chimpanzees will not evolve into human beings. Fourth, human culture plays an important role in shaping human evolution. This last point seems to be special in that human culture can act as a bridge between biology and the humanities and/or social sciences. However, many biology instructors have little acquaintance with facet of the curriculum. Therefore, it should be noted that instructors for general biology classes need to comprehend and read more about human evolution in terms of human culture.
