거란문자 분석을 통한 거란(契丹) 국명(國名) 연구

국문 초록

국명(國名)은 한 국가나 왕조를 나타내는 상징성을 가진다. 따라서 국명을 정할 때 그 의미가분명해야 하며 한번 정해진 국호는 거의 바뀌지 않는 것이 일반적이다. 그러나 야율아보기(耶 律阿保機)가 세운 거란은 여러 차례 국명이 변동되었다고 보아 왔다. 거란은 원래 ‘거란(契丹)’을 국가의 명칭으로 삼았으나 이후 중국 북쪽의 연운16주를 차지한이후에는 ‘요(遼)’라는 한자 명칭을 병행하여 사용하였고 이후 거란 황제들의 재위 기간에따라 두 명칭을 번갈아 사용하였다고 일부 학자들은 주장하고 있다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 거란인들은 자신들의 국명을 거란문자로는 “[khitai]”와 “ [quli~quliʧi, xus]” 등으로 표기하고, 한문으로는 ‘契丹(Khtai or Khitan)’과 ‘遼(Liao)’라는한자로 표기하였다고 보았다. 이를 조합하여 “대(중앙)요거란국(大中央遼契丹國)” 혹은 “대(중앙)거란요국(大中央契丹遼國)”이라는 뜻을 가진 거란어 국명과 “大契丹” 혹은 “大遼”라는 한자 국명을 혼용하여 사용하였다. 또한 ‘遼(Liao)’와 대응하는 거란어 는 [quli/qur]라고 발음되며 요하(遼河, Liao River)와 관련이 있을 가능성이 높다고 보았다.

영문 초록

The name of country has symbolism that shows a nation or dynasty. Accordingly, its meaning must be clear when naming a country. It is common for the name of nation, which has been decided once, to be hardly ever changed. However, Khitai that was founded by Yelu-Abaozhi(耶律阿保機) was modified the name of the country many times. Khitan was confirmed to have originally had ‘Khitai’ as a national name, but to have subsequently used Chinese character dubbed ‘Liao(遼)’ in parallel after occupying 16 states of Yeonun(燕雲十六州) in northern China, and to have alternated between the two names after this according to the period of reign in emperors of Khitan. Khitan people marked the name of a country as “[khitai]” and “[quli~qur, hulʤi, xus]” with the Khitan Scripts and notated it as the Chinese character dubbed ‘Khitai or Khitan’ and ‘Liao’ with the Chinese writing. In combination of this, Khitan people used it with mixing the name of nation in Khitan language, which has a meaning dubbed “Great [central] Liao Khitan State(大[中央]遼契丹國)” or Great [central] Khitan Liao State(大[中央]契丹遼國),” and the name of country in Chinese character called “Great Khitan(大契丹)” or “Great Liao(大遼).” Also,  in Khitan language of corresponding to Liao is pronounced as *[quli/qur] and was considered to have high possibility of being likely related to Liao River(遼河).
