국문 초록

이 글은 TV드라마 <왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라-상속자들>에 나타난 계급표상을 분석한다. 이는 곧 이 드라마가 우리 사회에 존재하는 계급을 나타내는 징후적 문화 텍스트임을 강조하고자 하는 것이다. 이 드라마는 계급이 존재하는 신분 사회인 제국 고등학교에서 일어나는 일을 그린신데렐라 스토리의 멜로드라마이다. 카메라는 인물들이 속한 공간이나 가지고 있는물품을 통해서 인물을 소개하고 그들의 계급을 드러낸다. 드라마 속 주체는 여러 상품을 통해 자신의 이미지를 형성하고, 이렇게 형성된 이미지 역시 상품의 의미로 쓰이게 된다. 이를 통해 소비로 정체성이 결정되는 현 사회를 나타낸다. 이미지는 겉으로 보이는 모습일 뿐, 실제 삶과 같을 수 없다. 이 드라마는 사람들에게 보이는 모습과 실제 자신의 모습이 달라 고통 받는 인물들을 전면에 배치하였다. 일단 이 드라마의 남녀 주인공 모두를 자신의 약점을 감추고 제국 고등학교에서 높은계급으로 살아가도록 설정하였다. 이들이 다른 사람의 시선에 맞춰서 자신의 실제를감추고 살면서 생기는 위기와 갈등을 중심으로 서사를 구성하였다. 이를 통해 계급이얼마나 허위적인지가 드러난다. 계급의 변동을 보여주면서 허위성을 지속적으로 고발한다. 이미지로 생긴 계급은이미지가 변하면서 흔들리고 정체성 역시 함께 동요하게 된다. 초반에는 부모님의 재력을 힘입고 학교 내에서 가난한 사람들을 괴롭히던 서브 남자 주인공과 여자 주인공이 후반에는 부모님에게 생긴 불의의 일로 인해 계급에 변동이 생기면서 더 이상 괴롭히지 않게 되거나 오히려 무시를 당하는 모습을 보여준다. 친구들을 속이고 높은 계급을 유지하던 인물들의 약점이 폭로되면서 계급이 낮아지는 모습을 보여주기도 한다. TV 드라마 <상속자>는 노골적으로 계급을 언어화하면서 우리 사회에 존재하는 계급을 전면에 내세우면서 상품 이미지로 결정되는 계급의 유동성과 허위성을 폭로하였다.

영문 초록

This dissertation analyzes the symbols of class status seen in the TV drama The Heirs with a symptomatic reading, by demonstrating that it is a cultural text reflecting the class system that exists in our society. This melodrama shows the stories unfolding within Jeguk High School, which is itself the emblem of a classbased feudal society. The camera introduces the characters and reveals their status through the place they belong or the items they own. Their image in the drama is formed through owning diverse goods and is used to convey the meaning of such goods, indicating a present society whose identity is decided by consumption. Image is only appearance and cannot reflect one’s real life. According to this principle, those who are harassed because their appearance does not resemble their true selves are placed at the forefront of this drama. Both male and female protagonists coexist with their high social status at Jeguk High School, where they conceal their weaknesses. The storyline revolves mainly around the crises and conflicts ensuing as they lead their lives hiding their own selves, revealing the inauthenticity of social class. This fictitiousness constantly emerges as the characters experience variations of social status, and the status generated by one’s image vacillates as the image changes along with identity. Supported by the wealth of their parents, male and female “sub-protagonists” initially bully poor persons in school. However, their status changes as their parents suffer mishaps; as a result, they no longer bully; if anything, by the end they are ignored by others. As the weaknesses of those who betray their friends and maintain high status are revealed, their status is lowered. By openly verbalizing it, the TV drama The Heirs places the system of class status existing in our society at the forefront and reveals its volatility and fictitiousness by constructing appearance around material goods.
