동남아 지역연구의 현황과 과제

국문 초록

본 연구는 동남아 지역연구의 최근 연구 현황과 문제점을 파악하고, 향후 과제와 연구 방향을 모색하는데 주요 목적이 있다. 특히 본 연구는 지역연구로서 동남아 연구의 형성과 진화과정을 개괄적으로 살펴보고, 해외 지역에서 발간되고 있는 주요 학술지들의 최근 5년간 동남아 연구 동향을 고찰함으로써 이것이 과거의 연구 동향과 비교하여 어떤 변화와 지속성을 표출하고 있으며, 어떤 문제점이 있는가를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 최근 5년간 동남아 지역연구는 과거의 문제점들이 많이 개선되었음에도 불구하고, 아직도 연구 시각 및 연구자의 지역적 편중성, 연구방법의 모호성과 연구 분야의 한정성, 그리고 비교연구에 대한 지역적 경직성과 제한성 등의 문제점들이 지속되고 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 현실적으로 연구자의 연구 시각 및 국적이 아직도 서구 중심적으로 편향되어 있었으며, 연구 주제와 대상 국가 또한 특정 학문분과와 역내 주요 국가들로 집중되어 있었다. 연구방법에 있어서도 개별국가 중심의 특수성이 지나치게 강조되다보니 보편성을 지닌 이론적 일반화를 추구하는 비교연구가 부족한 실정이었다. 동남아 지역연구가 지니는 이러한 문제점들을 해소하고 보다 발전적인 방향으로 연구가 추진되기 위해서는 지역연구 내에 내재되어 있는 서구 중심적 시각을 탈피하여 보다 객관적이고 심층적인 연구방법들이 개발되어야 할 것이며, 그 동안 동남아 지역연구에 내재되어 온 특수성이나 정책적 실용성의 한계를 극복하여 보다 보편적인 관점에서 동남아가 지녀온 이론적 가치나 학술적 중요성이 재발견되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the recent trend and identify problems of Southeast Asian study in order to suggest future task and research direction. For this purpose, this study reviews Southeast Asian study from its formation to maturing trend as an area study. In so doing, this study will analyze the research trends by looking at academic journal articles published in the major journals for the past 5 years. This study provides that, although quite remarkably improved, Southeast Asian study still suffers from the following [social scientific] problems; Western bias in terms of researcher’s origins and perspectives, limited application of scientific re search methods and asymmetrical case concentrations, all of which attributes to non-flexible comparative study. The Western researchers and their perspectives have dominated the field, which furthermore characterized the trends of major research topics and cases of countries. Due to such trends, over-emphasis on case-uniqueness has hindered researchers from seeking theoretical and empirical generalization. Thus, in order to overcome such prevailing problems in the field, it is necessary to develop region-wide focused perspectives by growing out of Western-oriented research perspectives, and yet to maintain more objective and universal research method. By doing so, Southeast Asian study could improve its current limited policy implications and emerge with the theoretical value and academic importance of Southeast Asian study in the universal perspective.
