조지 W. 부시 대통령의 지지율을 통해 본 미국정치의 양극화

국문 초록

본 논문은 미국정치의 특징인 양극화 현상이 의회에서 뿐만 아니라 유권자 사이에서도 발생되는 현상인지 알아보기 위해 조지 W. 부시의 지지율을 정당일체감, 정치적 선호도, 그리고 사회·경제적 차원에서 분석해 보았다. 분석결과 무엇보다 눈에 띠게 발견되는 현상은 부시대통령에 대한 평가에 있어 공화당 지지자와 민주당 지지자간에 커다란 차이가 발생하고 있다는 점이다. 이러한 현상이 클린턴정부 하에서도 발생하였는지 비교해 살펴본 결과 클린턴대통령에 대한 평가에 있어서는 민주당 지지자와 공화당 지지자간의 차이는 그리 크지 않았다. 정당일체감 외에 정치적 선호도와 인종으로 구분하여 보았을 때도 부시대통령에 대한 평가는 커다란 차이가 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 미국정치가 갈등과 양극화라는 중요한 변화를 겪고 있다는 점을 보여준다. 한편, 양극화 현상의 수준을 감안한다면 양극화는 당분간 지속될 수 있다는 전망을 가능케 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine whether the electorate has been polarized in terms of evaluating President George W. Bush’s job performance. It is generally believed that the electorate with Democratic party identification is different from Republican supports. However, the results show that the difference is larger than expectation. In particular, the difference is compared with the difference on the evaluation of President Clinton. This study found that the difference between Re publican supports and Democratic supports in evaluating President Clinton was not that significant in relative terms. Likewise, it found that political preference and race played a major role in evaluating president Bush. These findings show that U.S politics has been experiencing a change in conflict structure and more specifically electoral polarization. It is hard to know when this type of political polarization will be eased, but it is expected that the polarization will last for the time being.
