국문 초록

이 연구는 질적연구 참여자(표본) 선정의 대표성에 대한 문제제기에 대해 Mead의 자아이론에 기대어 이론적 정당화를 시도하였다. 기본적으로 Mead의 이론은 개인과 사회의 관계에 대해 사회적 구조의 우위성을 전제한다. 분명, 인간이 자아를 형성해가는 그 과정은 구조적 동질성과 사회적 보편성에 근거한 정체성 양상의 내면화 과정이지만, 개인의 타자와의 실질적인 상호작용, 그리고 개인 정신 내 [I]의 능동적 작용은 자아의 고유성 역시 확보한다. 따라서 사회화된 인간은 타자와의 상호작용 과정에서 보편성과 고유성 모두를 담지한 존재가 된다. 이를 연구 과정에 적용하면, 연구자는 연구자의 고유성, 연구자와 참여자의 공동의 보편성, 참여자의 고유성의 세 단계를 거치며, 참여자를 이해하는 과정에서, 질적연구에 적합성을 갖는 표본의 대표성의 의미를 보다 분명하게 드러낼 수 있게 된다. 결과적으로 Mead 이론에 비추어 본 참여자(표본) 선정에 대한 대표성 논의는 단지 질적연구가 특정 집단에 한정된 이해만을 추구하는 연구가 아닌, 보다 보편적 관점에서 다른 사람들의 삶을 이해하는데 도움을 주는 연구방법론임을 밝히고 있다.

영문 초록

This study attempted to build a theoretical justification by applying Mead’s self-theory to raise the question of the representativeness of participant(sample)s’ selection in qualitative research. Basically, Mead’s theory presupposes the superiority of social structures in the relationship between individuals and society. Obviously, the process of human self-forming is an internalization process of identity patterns based on structural homogeneity and social universality, but it is also true that the actual interaction of the individual with the other and the active interaction of [I](ego) within the individual’s mind also secures the uniqueness of the self. Therefore, socialized human beings become the existent that bears both universality and uniqueness in the process of interaction with others. Applying this to the research process, the researcher goes through three stages of the researcher’s uniqueness, the researcher and the participant’s common universality, and the uniqueness of the participant. In the process of understanding the participant, accordingly, it becomes possible to more clearly reveal the meaning of the representativeness of the sample(s) suitable for qualitative research. As a result, the discussion on the representativeness of participant(sample)s’ selection in the light of Mead’s theory revealed that qualitative research is not to seek only a limited understanding of a specific group, but to help understand the lives of others from a more universal point of view.
