한국어 음절 규칙이 시각적으로 제시된 영어 단어 재인에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

외국어(L2)의 처리가 모국어(L1)의 특성에 영향을 받는다는 것은 다양한 연구를 통해 밝혀진 사실이다. 국내에서도 한국인들이 영어 단어를 처리할 때 한국어 음절 규칙의 영향을 받는다는 연구들이 보고되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 전통적인 점화 패러다임에 기반한 어휘판단과제(Lexical decision task: LDT)를 이용하여, 한국인들이 시각적으로 제시된 영어 단어를 판단할 때 한국어 음절 규칙의 영향을 받는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 참가자들에게 점화 자극으로 ‘si’ 또는 ‘sim’과 같이 첫음절이 2음소인 자극과 3음소인 자극을 제시하고 이어서 ‘simple’과 같이 한국어 음절로 첫음절이 3음소로 구성되는 영어 단어 또는 ‘similar’와 같이 첫음절이 2음소로 구성되는 영어 단어를 제시하였다. 그 결과 첫음절 3음소 조건의 경우에는 점화 자극으로 ‘sim’이 제시되면, ‘si’가 제시되었을 때보다 상대적으로 반응이 빨랐다. 하지만 첫음절이 2음소인 조건의 경우 에는 두 점화 조건 간의 차이가 없었으며 두 조건 모두에서 통제 조건에 비해 반응이 빨랐다. 이러한 결과는 한국어 단어재인의 기본 처리 단위가 음절이며 한국인들이 시각적으로 제시된 영어 단어를 처리할 때도 한국어 음절 규칙의 영향을 받는다는 것을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Various studies have shown that the processing of foreign languages is influenced by the native language. In this study, using priming paradigm, we investigated whether recognition of the visually presented English words was affected by the Korean syllabification rules. Participants were presented with si or sim as prime stimuli, followed by English words with two phonemes in Korean syllabification(e.g., similar ), and English words with three phonemes in the first syllabification(e.g., simple ). As results, for cases like ‘simple , word recognition was faster when ’sim’ was presented as a prime than when ‘si’ were presented. However, for cases like ‘similar’, both ‘sim’ and ‘si’ prime conditions facilitated word recognition and there was no difference between the two prime conditions. These results suggest that syllable is the basic processing unit of Korean word recognition. The results also indicate that processing of the English words is affected by Korean syllabification rules.
