국문 초록

칼빈을 매개로 한 국제적 네트워크를 통해서 네덜란드에 칼빈의 종교개혁 신학이 뿌리를 내릴 수 있었는데, 그 중심에는 종교적 박해로 난민이 되어 제네바에서칼빈과 베자에게 직접 신학을 배웠던(1559-1561) 필립 마르닉스(Philip Marnix van St. Aldegonde: 1540-1598)의 공헌이 존재한다. 마르닉스는 스페인의 박해와 칼빈주의에 대한 가톨릭 신학자들의 공격으로 공포와 혼란이 극에 달했던 1560-70년대네덜란드 사람들을 위해서 『로마 교회의 벌집(Den Byencorf der H. Roomische Kercke: 1569)』을 출판했다. 그는 성경이 최고의 권위임을 밝혔고 가톨릭교회의 성찬론을 집중적으로 공격했다. 그에 의하면 로마 교회의 신학은 종교회의나 로마 교황의 법령에서 독이 든 꿀을 딴 꿀벌들이 만든 벌집과 같으며, 그것을 해독하는 길은순수한 만나인 하나님의 말씀을 먹는 것이다. 당시 네덜란드의 칼빈주의는 교육받은 고위층을 중심으로 남부 프랑스어권이 중심이었고, 북쪽의 네덜란드어권과 사회적 계층적 차이가 있었는데, 마르닉스는 『로마 교회의 벌집』을 네덜란드어로 출판함으로 양 지역과 계층을 개혁신앙으로 묶어주었고, 아직도 칼빈주의 신앙에 합류하기를 망설이는 자들을 격려했다. 마르닉스는 네덜란드 칼빈주의자들이 스페인에 대해 저항하는 것을 양심의 자유에 근거한 신앙적인 행위로 변호했으며, 칼빈주의적 국가론에 근거해서 오렌지공 윌리엄의 외교 자문으로 안트베르펜의 시장도 역임했고 국제적 공조를 이끌어 내려고 노력하기도 했다. 그러므로 본 연구는가장 불안하고 불확실하던 16세기 중반 네덜란드에 칼빈의 신학이 어떻게 뿌리내리게 되었는지를 파악할 수 있는 귀중한 역사적 사례가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Calvin’s theology of Reformation was able to take root in the Netherlands through an international network through Calvin. At the center of it, it is remarkable to mention the contribution of Philip Marnix, who became a refugee through religious persecution and learned theology directly from Calvin and Beza in Geneva(1559-1561). Marnix published Den Byencorf der H. Roomische Kercke(1569) for the Dutch in the 1560s and 70s, when horror and confusion struck by Spanish persecution and the attacks of Roman Catholic theologians on Calvinism. He revealed that the Bible is the highest authority and intensively attacked the Roman Church’s eucharist. According to him, the theology of the Roman church is like a beehive made by bees, picking poisonous honey in the Church Council or the Decree of the Pope, and the way to decode it is to eat the word of God, pure manna. With this book, Marnix tried to make a unity in the Reformed faith and encouraged those who still hesitate to join the Calvinist faith. Marnix defended the Dutch Calvinists’ resistance against Spain as a religious act based on freedom of conscience. Based on the Calvinist theory on Church and State, he served as a diplomatic advisor to William of Orange, the Father of the Netherlands, and as the mayor of Antwerp, and sought to lead international cooperation for the freedom of the Netherlands. Therefore, this study will be a valuable historical example to understand how Calvin’s theology took root in the Netherlands in the mid-16th century, which was the most disturbing and uncertain.
