국문 초록

본 연구는 기업의 사회적 책임 활동(Corporate Social Responsibility: 이하 CSR)과 투자효율성 간의 관련성을 알아보았다. 과거에는 CSR이 도덕적 관점에서 사회 및 여러 이해관계자들에 대한 자선적 지출로서 이용되었으나, 최근에는 CSR이 투자의 일환으로서 지속적인 성장을 위한 전략 혹은 경쟁 우위를 확보할 수 있는 전략으로 이용되고 있다. 기업의 투자의사결정은 경영자에게 부여된 중요한 의사결정의 하나로서 투자의 적절성 여부는 기업의 장기적인 존속과 직결된다. 만약 기업이 지속적인 성장을 위한 전략으로서 CSR에 투자하고 있다면, CSR이외의 다른 투자안의 결정에 있어서도 장기적인 성장을 위한 선택을 할 것이므로 CSR을 하는 기업은 효율적인 투자의사결정을 할 것으로 기대된다. 한편, 선행연구들에 따르면 CSR은 정보비대칭 및 회계 정보의 품질에 영향을 미친다. 또한, 정보비대칭 및 회계 정보의 품질은 기업의 투자효율성에 영향을 미친다. 만약 CSR을 하는 기업과 그렇지 않은 기업 간에 정보비대칭과 회계 정보의 품질에 유의한 차이가 있다면, 투자효율성에 있어서도 유의한 차이가 존재할 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 CSR과 투자효율성 간의 관련성을 살펴봄으로서, CSR이 경영자의 투자의사결정에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 검증하고자 한다. 실증분석결과, CSR을 하는 기업은 그렇지 않은 기업에 비해 투자효율성이 높았다. 또한, CSR을 하지 않는 기업은 산업경쟁도가 높을수록 과잉투자의 성향이 나타났으나, CSR을 하는 기업은 이러한 관련성이 나타나지 않았다. CSR을 하는 기업은 기업의 장기적인 성장을 위한 효율적인 투자의사결정을 하고 있음을 의미한다. 또한, CSR을 하는 기업은 그렇지 않은 기업보다 정보비대칭이 낮으며, 회계정보의 질 또한 높아 궁극적으로 투자효율성 역시 높음을 의미한다. 추가적으로 주식 시장에서 투자자들은 CSR 기업의 투자에 대해 그렇지 않은 기업의 투자보다 긍정적으로 반응하는 것으로 나타나 투자자들은 CSR 기업의 투자행태에 대해 인지하고 있는 것으로 해석된다. 본 연구는 CSR과 경영자의 투자행태와의 관련성을 살펴봄으로서 CSR을 하는 기업의 경영자들은 기회주의적인 의사결정이 아닌 기업을 위한 효율적인 투자의사결정을 하고 있음을 제시하였다. 선행연구가 CSR이 경영자의 윤리적인 재무보고행태에 영향을 미침을 보고하였다면, 본 연구는 더 나아가 CSR이 경영자의 윤리적인 투자의사결정에 영향을 미침을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines the relationship between corporate social responsibility (hereafter CSR) and manager’s investment efficiency. While CSR has been interpreted as a charitable expenditure for the various stakeholders in society from the moral point of view, CSR has recently been used as a strategy to secure a sustainable growth strategy or competitive advantage as a part of investment. Investment decision of a company is one of the most important decisions granted to executives. If the investment is appropriate or not appropriate, its aftermath is directly linked to long-term survival of the company. If the company is investing in CSR for the purpose of long-term growth, corporate executives to do CSR would make an effective investment decisions. According to the prior studies, CSR affects the asymmetric information and the quality of accounting information, which affect the efficiency of the investment. If there is a significant difference in the information asymmetry and the earnings quality between CSR companies and non-CSR companies, these would ultimately affect the investment efficiency. By examining the relationship between CSR and investment efficiency, this study verifies whether CSR affects the managers’ investment decisions. We found that CSR companies have higher investment efficiency, compared to non-CSR companies. We also found that if the competition within the industry is high, non-CSR companies strongly have the tendency of over-investment. But CSR companies’ investment efficiency are not affected by industry competition. Therefore, CSR companies have low information asymmetry and high quality of accounting information, which lead to investment efficiency. In the stock market, investors positively respond to investments of CSR companies, compared to those of non-CSR companies. This study provides evidence that managers of CSR companies make an efficient investment decision for the company rather than opportunistic decisions. While previous studies have stated that CSR is affecting the ethical behavior of financial reporting of managers, this study further suggests that CSR is influencing the ethical investment decisions of managers.
