국문 초록

본 연구는 기업에 대한 투자자의 관심이 성과-보상 민감도와 성과 기반의 경영자 교체 의사결정에 미치는 영향을 실증 분석한다. 투자자의 관심 수준은 Da, Engelberg, and Gao (2011)의 방법론을 바탕으로 우리나라 실정에 맞게 네이버가 제공하는 검색량 지수(이하, 네이버트렌드 지수)를 수작업으로 수집해 측정했다. 분석 결과에 따르면 기업에 대한 투자자들의 관심수준이 증가할수록 기업 성과와 임원 보상간의 관계가 밀접해 졌고, 성과가 좋지 않은 경영자의 교체 가능성도 증가했다. 이러한 결과는 정보통신환경의 발전으로 인해 투자자들이 정보를 수집할 수 있는 원천이 증가하고, 더욱 중요하게 이들이 의견을 수렴하고 여론을 형성할 수 있음에 따라 투자자들의 관심 수준이 기업 활동에 대한 감시역할을 하고 있음을 의미한다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates the effects of investors’ attention on the pay-performance sensitivity of the managers and the probability of CEO turnover. Da, Engelberg, and Gao (2011) suggests a new and more direct measure of investor attention using the frequency of searching activity in Google, and this search volume index captures the attention of investors in a more timely fashion. Based on the proxy proposed by Da et al. (2011), we measure investors’ attention by collecting related data via Naver Trends. Using a sample consisted of listed companies from 2008 to 2013, we find the following results. First, an increase in investors’ attention of the firm is associated with higher pay-performance sensitivity of executives in the firm. Second, a higher level of investors’attention more likely leads to CEO turnover when the firm’s performance is low. The results imply that investors could have monitoring role as one of the third-party outside of the firms caused by developing internet-based communication and increasing the information resources through internet.
