국문 초록

‘성지 수복’을 내세우며 9차례에 걸쳐 진행된 십자군의 역사에서, 제1~4차 십자군과 달리 13세기에 진행된 제5~9차 십자군은 성지 수복에 결국 실패한 역사로 서술되곤 한다. 하지만 기독교와 이슬람의 대결이라는 종교적 이분법을 벗어나 동부 지중해에서 벌어진 정치적 관계를 구체적으로 살펴보면 13세기에 진행된 십자군의 또 다른 성격들이 드러난다. 전쟁의 주요 당사자는 신성로마 제국, 프랑스 왕국, 아이유브 술탄국, 맘루크 술탄국으로 압축되는데, 이들은 종교적 차원의 대립 관계로만 일관했던 것이 아니었다. 기독교와 이슬람 각 세력은 분열의 양상을 보여주었고 때에 따라 종교와 관계없이 동맹을 이루기도 했다. 프리드리히 2세가 이끈 제6차 십자군은 이와 같은 성격을 가장 잘 보여주는 정치적 협상의 결과였다. 또한 중세 서유럽의 차원에서, 이와 같은 십자군 원정은 13세기에 이르러 십자군 전쟁의 주도권이 교회에서 세속군주에게 옮겨가고 있었다는 점, 십자군의 성공 여하와 상관없이 십자군 조직은 통합 왕국을 위한 현실적·이데올로기적 기반을 이루었다는 점을 보여준다.

영문 초록

In the history of the Crusades, which were held nine times with the Restoration of the Holy Land , the 5th to 9th Crusades in the 13th century, unlike the 1st to 4th Crusades, are described as a history that eventually failed to restore the Holy Land. However, if we look at the political relations in the eastern Mediterranean beyond the religious dichotomy of Christian and Islamic confrontation, another character of the crusade in the 13th century is revealed. The main parties to the war were the Holy Roman Empire, the Kingdom of France, the Ayyubid Sultanate, and the Mamluk Sultanate, and they didn t always form religious confrontations. Christian and Muslim forces showed a pattern of division, and the divided forces sometimes formed alliances regardless of religion. The 6th Crusade, led by Friedrich II, was the result of political negotiations that best illustrated this character. In addition, at the level of medieval Western Europe, such crusades show that by the 13th century, the initiative of the Crusades was moving from the Church to the secular monarch, and that the crusade organization, regardless of the success of the Crusades, had a realistic and ideological basis for the unified kingdom.
