20세기 초 승무의 전개와 구성

국문 초록

일제강점 중후반기에 승무가 다양한 구성으로 추어졌을 가능성을 전제로 1920~1945년 사이에 승무가 전개된 양상을 살펴보았다. 이 시기에 기생을 중심으로 놀음 뿐만이 아니라 정기연주회, 초청공연, 자선공연 등 다양한 공간에서 승무가 추어졌었다. 서양에서 들어온 다양한 예능 종목 사이에서도 당당히 공연된 종목이었다. 당시 그림과 신무용(모던댄스), 대중예술 분야에서도 승무에 관심을 갖고 현대화하려는 시도도 있었다. 또한 현행 무형문화재로 지정된 승무와는 다른 구성들을 발견하였고, 1920~1945년 사이에 추어진 승무에 대한 기사와 승무의 전승자료인 영상이나 선행연구를 통해 승무의 구성을 분석해보았다. 승무의 구성을 크게 두 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 우선 표면적으로 드러난 이야기나 갈등구조 없이 장단의 흐름에 따라 추어지는 승무로 한성준이 전승한 김천흥본 승무와 이주환본 승무, 조갑녀의 승무를 분석했다. 이 승무들은 주로 장단의 변화에 따라 춤사위의 질감과 춤의 정서를 변화하였다. 한성준이 전승한 김천흥본과 이주환본 승무는 좀 더 무대화된 경향이고, 조갑녀의 승무는 의상이나 춤의 전개에서 불교적 내용보다 연회석에 맞게 추어진 승무라고 하겠다. 그리고 한성준이 지도한 조선음악무용연구회의 승무에서 북놀음 대신 바라춤을 추는 바라무도 추어졌다. 다음은 승무의 전개에 있어서 일정한 이야기가 있거나, 인간적 번뇌와 귀의를 모티브로 한 승무로 심화영의 승무와 양소운의 승무를 분석했다. 심화영은 자신의 승무를 “스님이 10년 도를 닦았는데, 그 도를 파계시킨 춤”이라고 설명하면서, 염불-자진염불-타령-자진타령-굿거리-법고-굿거리의 과정에 따라 수련과 파계, 번뇌와 귀의의 구성을 설정하였다. 양소운의 승무는 <성인인상무>라는 부제가 있는데, 스님이 사람들의 흥에 이끌려 법의까지 벗는 오류를 범하지만, 참도를 깨닫고 도의 경지에 다다른다는 내용의 춤이라고 설명했다. 그리고 이러한 과정이 장삼춤과 북놀음, 바라춤, 허튼춤, 독경(회심곡)으로 구성되었다. 심화영의 승무나 양소운의 승무는 불교적 번뇌와 귀의라는 승무의 모티브를 춤으로 드러내는 구성을 갖고 있다. 이와같이 일제강점 중후반에 승무는 다양한 구성을 보여주고 있다. 그 이유는 불교의 구도와 번뇌, 승려의 인간적 갈등을 둘러싼 사례들이 조선시대부터 풍부했기 때문이며, 근대로 접어들며 흥미로운 연행물을 선보이고자 하는 예술적 욕구와 대중의 관심이 높았기 때문일 것이다. 그래서 승무는 어느 공연에서도 빠지지 않는 중요한 종목이었던 것이다. 현행 승무의 양상과 비교해보면 20세기 초기의 승무는 왕성한 창의력을 보여주면서, 여러 가능성을 열어놓았었다. 이제라도 20세기 초 승무를 다시 살펴볼 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Assuming that seungmu (Buddhist dance) was performed in various configurations, this research seeks to observe the development of the art between 1920 and 1945. During this period, gisaeng (female entertainers) performed seungmu in regular concerts, guest performances, and charity performances. Analysis of these performances led to clues about the composition of the current seungmu. This paper first analyzes the seungmu of Kim Cheonheung, Lee Juhwan, and Cho Gapnyeo. Kim and Lee, having learned seungmu from Han Sung-joon, performed seungmu according to the rhythm without a story or conflict structure. These seungmu primarily changed the texture and the emotion of the dance in accordance with the changes in rhythm, whereas the Joseon Music and Dance Research Institute performed the Baramu dance instead of drumming. The seungmu of Shim Hwayeong and Yang Soun were composed with a certain story in accordance to the development of the genre, or with a motif of human anguish and loyalty. Shim described her performance as “a religion where a monk had trained himself for 10 years, and the dance that destroyed it,” and expressed the composition of training, apostate, and ears according to the process of Yeombul-Jajin Yeombul-Taryeong-Jajin Taryeong-Gutgeori-Beopgo-Gutgeori. Yang Soun’s seungmu includes the subtitle, Sungininsangmu which describes the experiences of destruction and suffering in the process of the monk’s composition. This process consisted of jangsamchuum, drumming, barachum, huttonchuum, and hoesimgok. As such, the seungmu shows various composition styles in between 1920 and 1945. The reason for this is that the Buddhist composition, anguish, and the human conflict of monks have been abundant since the Joseon Dynasty. This may also be due to the new artistic needs and public attention given to the genre at the onset of the modern era. Compared to the current style of seungmu, dances in the early 20th century show vigorous creativity, leaving many possibilities open.
