외국 대학작문교육 실태 조사 연구

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 U.S. News & World Report가 2011년 미국 내 우수대학작문 프로그램(Best colleges : Writing in the disciplines)으로 선정한 23개 대학들을 대상으로 하여, 우리의 대학작문교육 설계와 실천에 참조할 만한 요소들을 조사하는 데 있다. 조사는 인터넷을 통하여 간접적인 방식으로 이루어졌으며, 조사 결과 작문 센터, 작문 멘토, 학문별 작문, 진단 평가와 수준별 작문교육, 외국인 학생들을 위한 작문 프로그램, 새로운 작문 능력을 반영한 교육과정 재구조화, 학생들의 작문 활동 참여 장려 등의 측면에서 참조할 만한 요소들이 있다고 판단되었다. 미국 대학들의 사례를 통해 볼 때, 우리 대학에서 작문교육을 보다 체계적으로 실시하기 위해서는 대학 구성원들에게 대학작문의 중요성을 널리 알리는 노력이 가장 시급해 보인다. 또한 학회 차원에서나 각 대학 차원에서 외국의 주요 대학들과 자주 교류 하면서 대학작문교육과 관련이 있는 정보를 서로 교환하는 것도 필요하다. 마지막으로, 외국 대학들의 작문교육 연구 성과를 적극적으로 수용하고 우리의 연구 성과도 외국에 적극적으로 소개할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This study investigated writing programs of 23 American colleges nominated as the best by U.S. News & World Reports in 2011 in order to find useful information in designing infrastructure and support system of writing programs in Korean universities. This study highlighted writing center, writing mentor, writing in the disciplines, placement test and differential writing courses, writing courses for international students, reconstruction of writing curriculum based on the research on new literacies, and incentives to encourage students’ writing practices. Recommended firstly is, based on the findings, the efforts of college composition community to inform college community of the importance of writing in the discipline in order to get their agreement on the investment for writing center, placement test, writing courses for international students, and so on. Collaboration with foreign universities and international academic exchanges are also necessary.
