조선대학교 <사고와 표현> 교육의 현황

국문 초록

고등학교 과정에서 국어, 영어, 수학은 모든 교과목의 핵심을 담당하고 있다. 이는 세 과목이 모든 학문의 기초 중의 기초라는 사실에서 기원한 발상이다. 그 연장에서 대학에도 대학국어, 대학영어, 대학수학 등의 기초과목이 개설된 적이 있다. 하지만 최근에는 대학국어의 전통이 무너지고 ‘글쓰기’ 및 ‘의사소통’ 과목이 그 자리를 대신하는 추세에 있다. 따라서 ‘대학국어’를 국어국문학과에서 주관하였던 것처럼, ‘글쓰기’ 및 ‘의사소통’ 과목으로의 이동은 별도의 교양교육 전담 기구(예컨대, 기초교육원)의 설치를 필요로 하게 되었다. 대학국어가 국어국문학과의 전공기초 수준의 커리큘럼으로 이루어진다면, ‘글쓰기’ 및 ‘의사소통’ 과목은 기초교양에서 요구되는 각종 능력의 계발을 목적으로 커리큘럼이 채워진다. 이는 대학에서 전공보다는 교양이 강조되는 최근의 추세를 반영한 것이다. 조선대학교에서도 전문적 교양인 양성을 목적으로 기초교육원이 신설되었고, 의사소통 관련 과목으로 <사고와 표현>을 기초교양의 핵심에 두고 가르치고 있다. <사고와 표현>은 크게 Ⅰ과 Ⅱ로 이루어져 있는데, Ⅰ에서는 ‘독서와 토론’을 Ⅱ에서는 ‘작문과 발표’를 중심에 두고 있다. 이것은 종래의 유사과목이 ‘글쓰기’에만 치중한 것을 개정한 것으로, 글쓰기 외에도 읽기, 말하기, 듣기 등 모든 의사소통 능력의 동등한 함양을 목적으로 삼는다. 특히 Ⅱ에서는 계열별 글쓰기를 강조하여 전공 글쓰기의 사전 체험을 강조하고 있는데, 이는 전공과 교양 사이에 다리를 놓으려는 시도라고 할 수 있다. 여기에는 대학작문의 본질을 전공 관련 글쓰기에 두고자 하는 의도가 포함되어 있다.

영문 초록

Korean, English, and mathematics are core academic subjects in secondary education in that these subjects have traditionally been considered as the fundamental bases of learning. Likewise, in higher education, “College Korean,” “College English,” and “College mathematics” have been established as primary subjects. However, it is currently noticeable that a typical course of “College Korean” is being replaced by “Writing” and “Communication” courses. Therefore, as a “College Korean” course is run and supervised by Korean Language and Literature department, it is imperative to establish an exclusive organization like a liberal arts department which promotes “Writing” and “Communication.” In addition, while “College Korean” is a basic level course for Korean Language Literature majors, “Writing” and “Communication” aim to help students develop important modes of thinking and intellectual skills and acquire a broad knowledge. It also reflects the current trend in education that a liberal studies education is more emphasized than undergraduate majors. The literal arts department at Chosun University is newly established to provide students with a broad vision and understanding essential to an educated person. Among literal arts programs, is a core course in relation to communication. Students are required to take in sequence, one of which focuses on ‘reading and discussion,’ and the other one on ‘writing and speech.’ Unlike other courses which mainly deal with writing, in essence, is an integrated course of writing, reading, speaking, and listening in order to improve students’ communication skills. Especially, is designed to act as a bridge between undergraduate majors and liberal studies by emphasizing students’s writing practices and skills in relation to their majors. It implies that the main purpose of “College Composition” is to promote students’ writing and communication skills for their major fields of study.
