국문 초록

약 100여 년 전에 심리학자 후에이는 독서과정의 완전한 분석은 심리학자들의 꿈의 성취와 같다고 말하였다. 독서가 얼마나 정교하고 복잡한 심리 과정인가를 강조한 말이다. 그런데 작문은 독서보다 훨씬 더 높은 지적작용이다. 독서가 2차적 지식 생산 과정이라고 한다면, 작문은 1차적 지식생산 과정이기 때문이다. 여러 수준의 작문 중에서, 대학작문은 가장 복잡하고 다양하고 수준이 높은 작문이다. 대학작문은 여러 측면의 특성을 동시에 갖추어야 한다 : 대학작문은 고등학교 작문의 후속적 연계이면서 수준은 더 높아야 하고, 교양적이어야 하고, 대학 내의 여러 전공으로 나아가는 학문성도 띄어야하고, 사회의 다양한 직업적 요구도 맞추어야 한다. 그런데 우리나라의 대학작문은 이런 여러 특성을 갖추지도 못하였고, 필요나 요구에 부응하지도 못하고 있다. 어쩌면 고등학교 작문보다 그 수준이 더 낮다고 할 수 있다. 이런 현실은 크게 두 가지 측면에서 연유한다고 본다. 하나는 대학에 대학작문 과정이 개설되어 있기는 하나, 그에 적합한 전공자가 거의 없다는 점이다. 그리고 두 번째는, 이는 첫 번째보다 더 심각한 문제로, 대학작문을 담당하는 강사나 교재 편찬 위원들이 대부분 작문 전공자가 아닌 어학이나 문학 전공자들이라는 점이다. 그런 점에서 우리나라 대부분 대학의 대학작문 교재가 언어학적 규칙을 가르치거나, 문학적 또는 수사학적 글쓰기에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 대학작문의 개선이 시급히 요청된다. 우선 대학작문을 담당하는 교수나 강사들을 모두 작문 또는 대학작문 전공자들로 구성하여야 한다. 그리고 최신의 대학작문 이론들을 도입하여 그 교재의 내용을 혁신적으로 개선하여야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

About one hundred years ago, famous psychologist Huey said that the complete analysis of reading process would almost be the acme of a psychologist’s dream. His words were to emphasize how much complex the reading process would be. But it has for a long time been agreed among the psychologists that writing would be higher than reading in the complexity of cognitive processes. It would not be unreasonable to say that writing is the primary knowledge production process, while reading is the secondary. Among all kinds of writing, college composition/writing would be the most complex and intricate workings of cognition in human mind. College composition has many characteristics in its position, nature, and needs. In its educational position, college composition comes after the high school composition. That is, college composition would be theoretically and educationally more difficult than the compositions at other levels. In the college, college composition is positioned at the gate of entering into various technical fields, that is, into the liberal arts field, social science field, and natural science field. College composition is also expected to meet the needs of various job-related writings in the society. College composition has many-sided aspects in its nature. But unfortunately, the current actual conditions of college composition in this country is far away from all these aspects; position, nature, and needs. An analysis betrayed that college composition textbooks fell far behind the high school composition textbooks in both writing theories and the teaching contents. Two very critical main reasons are assumed. The first is because of the traditional concept of college composition. Many scholars who are engaged in teaching or textbook development in the field of college composition still understand that the college composition is academically an applied area of linguistics and literature, and so they emphasize the teaching of grammar and textual rhetoric(the characteristics of various text types) in college composition curriculum, rather than the writer’s cognitive strategies in the writing processes. The second is because of the unqualified professors/lecturers of the college composition courses. Most professors and/or lecturers of the college composition courses are those who acquired their doctoral degrees in the fields of Korean linguistics or literature. Many paradigmatic changes in the field of composition/writing have occurred in the last few decades : From linguistics and literature to cognitive psychology in the theories and academic fields; From text itself to writer’s cognitive strategies in the teaching and researching focus. Innovative change are needed in college composition.
