대학작문교육의 위상과 실행 요건 연구

국문 초록

우리 사회가 본격적인 지식기반사회로 접어들면서 많은 대학들은 새로운 시대적 변화에 맞추어 대학 교육을 개혁하고 있는데 이때, 중요한 부분이 교육과정에 대한 개혁이다. 특히 교양교육은 전공 분야의 경계를 뛰어넘어 모든 학생들을 대상으로 교육하고 운영하는 과정으로 범교과적이고 유용한 교과목으로 구성되는데, 대부분의 대학에서 빠짐없이 개설되고 또 강조하고 있는 과목이 대학작문이다. 작문교육의 강화 배경에는 작문 고유의 성격과 학문 발달 외에도 시대와 사회 그리고 대학의 요구가 반영되어 있다. 즉, 새로운 지식에 대한 이해와 자신의 사고를 표현하는 과정이 매우 중요한 능력으로 주목받으면서 언어능력뿐만 아니라, 의사소통으로 분류할 수 있는 간학문간, 통섭의 인식들이 구체화된 대학작문이 대학 교양교육과정에서 핵심과목으로서 중요한 위치를 차지하게 되었다. 대학작문은 대학 전체 교육과정의 근간이 되는 ‘이해와 표현’을 다루고 다른 학문과의 소통을 이루는 과목으로서, 전 학년에 걸쳐 고르게 이수하여 체계적인 교육을 받아야 하는 과목으로 그 위상이 정립되어야 한다. 본고에서는 그에 따른 실행조건으로 다음의 네 가지를 제시하였다. 첫째, 전체 대학교육과정을 이끌어 나가는 과목으로서 대학작문교육이 차지하는 위상을 정립해야 한다. 둘째, 글쓰기 교육을 전체적인 틀 아래에서 조정하고 지도할 대학 내 통합기구가 필요하다. 셋째, 내용적인 측면에서 작문교육을 통해서 도달하고자 하는 글쓰기 하위영역의 성취기준을 명확히 제시해야 한다. 넷째, 인적 자원 면에서, 작문교육을 전공한, 대학작문교육을 담당할 전임 교수의 부족은 시급히 해결해야 될 문제이다. 작문교육은 전공을 공부하기 위한 기초 지식뿐만 아니라 대학 졸업 이후에도 사회 활동을 스스로 할 수 있도록 이끌어 주는 균형 잡힌 인간형으로 육성해 주는 교육이다. 이상의 논의처럼, 현재 대학 교양교육의 핵심 과목으로서 요구받고 있는 대학작문교육의 체계적인 실행을 위해 위상에 대한 관점과 조직, 내용, 구성에 대하여 획기적인 변화가 요구된다.

영문 초록

As we enter a knowledge-based society, many colleges are trying to change their curricula to follow the rapid changes in people’s needs. The focus lies on the revolution of education and curricula. One of the most commonly college requirements or non-major curriculum and most emphasized is ‘college composition’ which is considered to be one of the important courses that the students should take. Enforcement of college composition is not only based on the development and characteristics of the composition itself, but the requirements of both college and society. Furthermore, concepts of interdisciplinary and consilience have become important. Thus, composition is considered to be the center of college courses. Composition is no longer limited to ‘understanding and expressing’ what is related to the major courses, but extends to integration of all subjects. Therefore, composition must be adjusted as a course that requires systematic instruction. This article suggests four conditions to adjust composition as a systematic instructed course. Firstly, placement of the composition should be reconsidered as it leads the entire college courses. Secondly, centralized and integrated organization for composition is needed. Thirdly, achievement standards of the subcategory must be clearly presented within subject context. Fourthly, trained and qualified instructors are needed to teach this course. Composition not only provides foundation for studying in college, but also educates one to become individual who can engage in social interactions. As described above, college composition education requires epoch-making changes.
