장덕조 소설의 <젠더의식> 고찰

국문 초록

이 연구는 장덕조의 장편소설 『地下女子大學』을 대상으로 다양한 주체의 인물 들이 사회·문화적 관습을 재생산하며 욕망하는 주체, 윤리적 주체, 유목적 주체로서 굴절되고 분출되는 젠더 양상을 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 대상은 『地下女子大學』에서 남성 우위의 정치학을 수렴해 온 과거를 탈피하고 새로운 주체 인식을 보여주는 온 윤미, 소연, 경화 등 세 명의 여성 젠더가 중심이며, 부수적으로 남성 젠더를 대상으로 한다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 윤미를 통해 타인의 시선을 의식하고 자신의 육체를 보여주지만, 다른 한편으로 자신의 욕망을 표출하며 존재의 중요성에 대한 감각을 사회적으로 확인받는 등 육체에 대한 새로운 담론을 내재하는 가능성을 보여준다. 둘째, 소연을 통해 지배 담론에 순응하고, 자기 규율을 더욱 공고히 하는 바람직한 여성의식을 제시한다. 셋째, ‘여성 억압’의 주된 대상인 남성 권력의 폭력, 임신과 낙태, 억압 등의 문제에서 여성의 성적·재생산적 권리의 시도를 재기하는 경화의 자각으로 저항과 변화를 보인다. 이들은 관습에 대한 반란과 일에 대한 성취 등 외연과 지평을 확장하며 여성주체의 새로운 서사를 지향하는 모습을 부각하고 있다. 장덕조는 자본주의의 세태를 음성적으로 발화하며 성의 거래가 이루어지는 ‘청청장’ 요정을 배경으로 독자의 흥미를 극대화하며, 여성주의적 연대의 역학관계를 확대·심화하였으며 젠더의식을 다양하게 표상하였다. 또한, 젠더담론의 형상화 과정에서 현실의식의 문제를 내밀화·공존화·범주화하였다. 새로운 서사를 구축하는 이면으로는 산업 자본주의에서 파생된 사회적 환경의 이중적 양상 속에 여성 인식이 ‘경계’의 주체로서 사회·역사적 맥락의 과정에서 포섭/배제되는 한계 또한 지적할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the present study is to examine how characters of various agents in Jang Deok-jo’s novel Underground Women’s University reproduce social and cultural conventions and the way gender is bent and bursts out as desiring, ethical, and nomadic agents. This study looks into the female gender of Yun-mi, So-yeon, and Gyung-hwa in Underground Women’s University, three characters who move beyond the past that has accepted male-dominated politics and demonstrate new awareness as an agent, and male gender additionally. The following are the findings of the present study’s analysis: First, while the novel is conscious of how others see and shows one’s physical body through Yun-mi, it presents a possibility of a new discourse on the body as one’s desire is expressed and physical senses for the importance of one’s being are confirmed socially. Second, the novel shows preferred female awareness through So-yeon, which conforms to dominant discourse and further solidifies self- discipline. Third, the novel also demonstrates resistance and change with the realization of Gyeong-hwa, who attempts to restore women’s sexual and reproductive rights in the issues of violence by male power that mainly ‘oppresses women,’ pregnancy, abortion and oppression. These characters expand their outreach and horizon as in revolt against conventions and achievements in work and highlight an orientation towards the female agent’s new narrative. Jang describes the world of capitalism in underground style, maximizes the reader’s interest with the background of the luxury traditional restaurant ‘Cheongjeongjang’ where sex is bought and sold, expands and deepens the dynamic relations of feminist solidarity, and represents gender awareness in various ways. In addition, he makes the issue of awareness about reality covert, coexistent and categorized when a gender discourse is shaped. From the double- standard aspects of the social environment derived behind the scenes from industrial capitalism, its limitation may also be pointed out that female awareness is included or excluded in the social and historical context as the agent on ‘boundaries.’
