초심상담자의 수련과정 자발적 중도탈락 경험에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 초심상담자의 수련과정 자발적 중도탈락 경험과 그 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 상담경력 3년 이하인 초심상담자 5명을 대상으로 이들의 수련과정 자발적 중도탈락 경험에 대하여 심층면접을 진행하였다. 수집된 자료는 해석학적 현상학 연구방법을 적용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과 연구참여자들의 수련과정 자발적 중도탈락 경험은 다음과 같은 주제로 나타났다. 첫째, ‘소홀했던 자기돌봄이 남긴 상흔’으로 연구참여자들은 수련과정에서 자기분석의 고뇌와 충족되지 않는 자기 돌봄의 욕구 등 상담자의 인간적 자질을 갖추기 위한 고충을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 완전해야만 할 것 같은 ‘상담자’라는 이름은 자신으로 향하는 질책의 시선으로 이어졌고 이들에게 상담은 닿을 수 없음을 향한 끊임없는 지향을 의미하였다. 셋째, ‘이상만을 좇을 수 없는 현실’로 상담자로서 전문성을 인정받기 어려운 사회적, 현실적 제약은 냉엄하게 인식되었고 이들의 불안에 이정표가 되어줄 동반자의 존재는 모호하였다. 넷째, 수련과정의 여러 활동에서 잠시 멈추어진 기간이 예상보다 길어지면서 중단의 시간이 ‘이별이 될 줄 몰랐던 멈춤’으로 이어진 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 수련과정 자발적 중도탈락을 통해 다른 분야에서 생애 주제를 실현해 나아가는 우회로를 선택하였으나 상담 수련과정의 경험은 여전히 같은 삶의 목적을 향하고 있다는 의미로 내재화되고 있었다. 본 연구는 상담자의 성장과 발달의 이면에 가리어져 있던 자발적 중도탈락 경험을 재조명하고 그 의미를 제시함으로써 예비상담자나 초심상담자, 수련감독자들에게 실천적 시사점을 제공한다는 의의를 갖는다.

영문 초록

This research explores novice counselors’ experience of voluntary dropout from counseling training. Five novice counselors with less than three years of counseling experience were recruited and interviewed on their experiences of the voluntary dropout. Collected data was analyzed based on an interpretive phenomenology method. The results demonstrated that the experience of voluntary dropout from counseling training correspond to the following topics. First, participants experienced struggles in acquiring personal qualities as counselors, such as the agony of self-analysis and the unsatisfiable desires for self-care. Second, a belief that a counselor must be perfect led to self-criticism to put participants to conceive counseling as a seeking of an unattainable goal. Third, participants perceived the social and realistic restrictions that make it hard for a counselor’s to be recognized for their professionalism, while the counterpart to support their anxiety was ambiguous. Fourth, as the layover from training activities lasted longer than expected, this often elongated into an unexpected termination. Fifth, although participants selected a detour to achieve their life themes in a different area after the dropout, their experience with counseling training was still internalized as they pursued the same purpose in life. This research highlights the voluntary dropout experience in counseling training that has been hidden behind a counselor’s growth and development and gives practical implications that counselors, novice counselors, and training supervisors practice on.
