니케아 신경은 종교 권력의 지배 이념인가?

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 로마 제국으로부터 박해를 받은 기독교인들 상당수가 여성, 노예, 어린이, 노인, 자유인 등의 민중들이었다는 것과 기독교의 정통 신학과 신앙의 핵심인 니케아 신경이 과연 기독교 신앙을 정체성과 정통성을 대표하고 있는가를 민중신학과 종교 권력의 관점에서 연구하는 것이다. 박해 시기에 기독교 민중들은 그리스도의 민중적 삶을 따라 실천했고, 일부 교부와 성직자들이 이에 동참했다. 반면에 신분 계급이 높고 그리스 철학을 아는 식자층의 초기 교부들은 관념적인 그리스철학과 그리스도를 연결 지으며 현학적인 기독론 논쟁을 했다. 이것은 박해를 피하려고 비정치적인 주제들을 선택한 것이라는 가설을 세운다. 그리고 4세기 초 콘스탄티누스 황제가 기독교를 인정한 이후 기독교는 박해받던 종교의 생명력을 잃고, 일순간 정치 권력과 교회 권력을 갖는 종교로 변질했다. 니케아 신경 선포 이후 반세기 동안 예수의 신성과 인성을 두고 치열한 논쟁과 교회 권력 탈환을 시도했고, 마침내 테오도시우스 황제 때 아타나시우스파가 승리하면서 기독교 국가를 세웠다. 황제와 교부들은 최고 진리를 명분으로 하고 신권 권력(theocracy)을 강화시켰다. 니케아 신경을 계기로 기독교는 십자군 전쟁, 중세와 식민지 확장, 현대까지 무소불위의 권력을 갖는 가장 핵심적인 지배 이념이 되었다.

영문 초록

The aim of this article is to re-examine the reality of Christians persecuted by the Roman Empire through the lens of the Minjung: women, slaves, children, some the priests. We will enquire whether the Nicaea Creed, the core of Christianity’s orthodoxy faith, is legitimate based on the Minjung theology and religious power methodology. During the persecution period, the Christian Minjung participated in the practical life which Jesus exemplified, working for the Minjung, and some priests joined in. On the other hand, most priests who had high status and knowledge of Greek philosophy engaged in speculative, abstract, and conceptual Christological debates. I propose that they intentionally chose non-political themes for the purpose of escaping persecution and death. After Constantine Emperor, Christianity lost its original vitality and quickly turned into a religion that gained ad used political and church power. I saw that there the Nicaea creed was at the core of the typhoon. In particular, Theodosius Emperor used the neo-Nicaea creed to establish a Christian state. And he banned Christian heresy and pagan religions with the strong edicts, and strengthened the ruling ideology of the Nicaea creed to the whole Roman Empire. Finally, Emperors and Fathers strengthened the theocracy with the highest truth and legal sanctions.
