국문 초록

정확한 연령 x 세의 사람이 x + n세에 도달하지 못하고 사망할 확률을 말하는 사망확률은 생명표 작성의 근간이 된다. 생명표 작성에 사용하는 사망확률은 원 자료의 사망확률이 아닌 안정적인 형태로 보정된 사망확률을 사용한다. 여기서 보정이란 관측치로부터 초기 값을 산출하고, 이 초기 값을 기반으로 적합성(fitness)과 평활성(smoothness)을 만족하는 값을 추정하는 일련의 과정을 말한다. 현재 미국 NCHS(National Center for Health Statistics)와 우리나라 통계청에서는 각각 다른 방식으로 사망확률을 보정하고 있다. NCHS에서는 사망확률을 Beers의 보정계수를 이용하여 보정하고 있으며 통계청은 Greville 9차항 보정식을 이용하여 사망확률을 보정하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 Beers의 보정계수와 Greville 보정식에 대하여 알아보고 이 두 가지 보정 방법을 원 자료에 적용하여 정확성과 평활성에 대해 비교하였다. 마지막으로 각 보정방법에 의한 사망확률을 이용하여 생명표를 작성하고 기대여명을 구해 본 후 각각의 보정방법을 평가하였다.

영문 초록

Life tables are constructed based on mortality rate, which is the probability of a person at a specific age dying before his or her next birthday. The mortality rate used for building the life tables is usually interpolated to stabilize the variations in age. The term ‘interpolation’ in this context refers to the procedure that derives an initial value from the observed data, and then estimates the fitness and smoothness (of something) based on it. At present, the National Statistical Office (NSO) in South Korea and the National Centre for Health Statistics (NCHS) in the U.S. adopt different approaches to interpolate the mortality rate. While the NCHS employs the Beers’s interpolation coefficient, the NSO uses the Greville’s formula to interpolate the mortality rate. In this paper, it is of interest to examine the Beers’s interpolation coefficient and the Greville’s formula by applying each of the methods to the observed data, and to compare their performance in terms of the fitness and smoothness. This paper also aims to evaluate each of the approaches based on its life table and life expectancy table calculated.
