국문 초록

본 연구는 직장인이 대학원에 진학하는 동기가 무엇인지 그리고 진학 동기가 가지는 그 의미가 무엇인지를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 일과 학습을 병행하는 직장인 9명을 대상으로 2018년 8월부터 12월까지 약 5개월에 걸쳐 면담을 통한 질적 연구를 하였다. 녹음자료의 전사본을 토대로 해석한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 직장인의 대학원 진학 동기는 첫째, 학위의 필요성, 둘째, 미래 삶의 준비과정, 셋째, 인간관계와 소속감, 넷째, 배우는 즐거움, 다섯째, 배움 욕구와 이로 인한 계속 학습, 여섯째, 존재를 위한 학습이다. 이러한 직장인의 대학원 진학 동기를 바탕으로 추출한 그 의미는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회에서 신분이나 실력의 수단으로 볼 수 있는 학위의 후광효과, 둘째, 현재에서 미래로 가는 징검다리의 역할, 셋째, 교육을 통해 인간관계를 맺는 외연 확장, 넷째, 힘든 사회생활에서 대학원은 힐링(healing), 다섯째, 공부는 중독, 여섯째, 아는 만큼 보인다는 의미로 해석되었다. 이상의 연구결과를 보면, 일과 학습을 병행하는 직장인에게 대학원 진학은 삶의 원동력이 되며 평생학습의 실천임을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This paper is to find out motivations driving company workers to enter graduate school for further studies and its meanings. To this end, with 9 company workers who work and study, qualitative research was carried out through interviews, over 5 months from August to December, 2018. Based on entire copies of the interview recordings, the outcomes of the analysis were drawn as follows. The motivations to drive the employees to advance to graduate school are, first, for degree, second, preparation for the future life, third, building human network and sense of belonging, fourth, purely seeking the pleasure of study, fifth, desire for study and continuous study, sixth, study for existence. The meanings derived from such motivations were as follows. First meaning can be found in the halo effect of degree that might help seek social status or competencies. Second, it can be a bridge to help them advance from present to future. Second, through education, they can extend human network. Fourth, graduate school can be a place to heal their wound from tough social life. Fifth, maybe, they might be addicted to study. Sixth, if they know further, they will be able to do better in the world.
