청소년기 모(母) 사별 경험에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 청소년기에 어머니와 사별하고 현재 중년이 된 여성들의 모(母) 사별 경험과 이후 삶의 경험을 이해하고자 진행된 해석학적 현상학 연구이다. 10대 청소년기에 어머니와 사별한 경험이 있고, 자녀가 있는 중년기혼 여성 5명을 대상으로 심층 면담을 실시하였고, 해석학적 현상학 방법으로 분석하여 연구 결과를 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 연구 참여자들의 청소년기 모(母) 사별과 이후 삶의 경험은 다음과 같이 나타났다. 첫째, 이들은 어머니를 ‘특별한’ 사람으로, 긍정적이고 이상적인 모습을 중심으로 하는 친화적 일화를 기억하면서 그리움과 죄책감, 회한 등을 특징적으로 경험하고 있었다. 둘째, 어머니 사망 당시, 충격과 슬픔 외에 생존에 대한 원초적 불안을 경험하면서도 주위 사람들과 이러한 심리적 어려움에 대해 공유하지 않으며 ‘괜찮은 사람’으로 살아가기 위해 노력한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 이들은 출산과 육아 등 여성적 성역할 발달 과정에서 진정으로 과거의 어머니를 이해하고 공감하기 시작하며 ‘절대적 지지자’ 및 ‘양육 지원자’로서의 두 가지 측면에서 어머니의 부재를 다시 절감하였다. 넷째, 내ㆍ외적으로 치열했던 삶 속에서 스스로 몸에 익힌 강인한 생존력, 종교, 그리고 어머니에게 사랑받았던 기억이 이들에게 강한 자원이 되었고, 아버지와 남편 등의 인적 자원을 최대한 활용하여 적응적 삶을 살아낸 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 사망 당시 어머니의 나이인 중년기에 들어서면서, 참여자들은 어머니를 ‘우상’ 혹은 ‘보호자’가 아닌 ‘동성의 동지’로 바라보게 되었으며 모(母) 상실 경험 이후 다양한 경험이 합쳐져 넓은 조망과 높은 공감 능력을 갖추게 되었다고 느끼고 있으며 이제는 자신이 ‘오래 함께 해주는 엄마’가 되기를 희망하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study is an interpretative phenomenological research to understand experiences in life of the middle aged women who lost their mothers in adolescence and how they interpret their experiences. For the study, an in-depth interview was conducted with five middle-aged women who lost the mother in their adolescences and currently have their own children. To draw the results of the study, interpretative phenomenological analysis was conducted. The analysis results on the participants’ experiences in adolescence and their lives afterwards were as follows. First, they experienced the emotion of longing, guilt, and regret while remembering their mother as a ‘special person’ with friendly anecdotes only in mother-daughter relationship centered on a positive and ideal figure, Second, at the time of their mother’s death, they tried to become a ‘good person’ without sharing these psychological difficulties with people around them, even when experiencing the deep anxiety of survival besides shock and sadness. Third, they began to understand and sympathize with the mother of the past while doing their feminine gender roles such as childbirth and parenting, and again keenly acknowledged their mother’s absence in two aspects as ‘an absolute supporter’ and ‘a parenting supporter.’ Fourth, the self-obtained strong viability, religion, and memories of being loved by mothers have become strong resources for them to live their intense life both internally and externally, and they could adaptively utilize their human resources such as support from father and husband as much as possible. Fifth, entering the middle age, around which their the mother passed away, the participants began to see their mothers as a ‘comrade of the same sex’ rather than as an ‘idol’ or ‘guardian.’ They also feel that they have the ability to empathize, and now they are hoping that they will become a ‘mother to be there long enough ‘ for their children.
