국문 초록

21세기는 도시의 시대이다. 인류 세계사를 통해 지난 400여 년 간 지배적인 체제였던 국민국가(nation states)가 서서히 기울어가며 그 중심이 도시 단위로 바뀌어가고 있다. 하지만 산업혁명 이후 기형적 발전과 인간 소외의 가장 대표적 공간이었던 도시는, 20세기 들어 2번에 걸친 세계전쟁 이후 도시재건(urban reconstruction)이라는 화두에 매달렸다. 이 과정에서 환경파괴와 인권의 추락, 공동체의 붕괴와 양극화 등은 도시의 새로운 문제로 지적되기 시작하였다. 그러자 1990년에 이르러 이제 도시는 개발의 대상이 아니라 올바로 재생되어야 할 공간으로 인식되기 시작하였다. 소위 도시 재생 (urban regeneration)이 오늘날 도시의 가장 중요한 이슈로 떠오른 것이다. 하지만 성장의 한계에 직면한 인류가 찾은 대안은 발전가능이 아니라 “지속가능”이라는 화두이다. 이 문제를 좁혀서 도시로 치환해 보자. 성장의 한계가 가장 먼저오는 곳은 “도시”이다. 도시재생은 이러한 지속가능성을 바탕으로 진행 되어야 한다. 공연의 총 책임자로서 연출의 개념은 현대에 들어와서 “예술가와 도시 간의 중재역을 자처하고 나선 최근에 출현한 문화적 진행자”로 인식된다. 이는 도시를 하나의 공간, 무대로 생각할 수 있는 이론적 근거이기도 하다. 이렇듯 문화적 도시재생의 창조적 인재로서 연출은 도시라는 무대에 콘텐츠를 부여하고 교육하고, 조직하고, 창조하는데 필수적인 기능을 수행 할 수 있다. 그러므로 지속가능한 도시 재생의 가장 큰 핵심은 “도시는 구조물이 아니라 사람이 핵심”이라는 사실에서 출발한다. 도시재생을 담당할 주체로서 “도시 연출”은 그러므로 향후 우리의 중요한 관심사가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

The urban era of the 21st century is leading to what is called, sustainable urban regeneration, which is now in steady progress. However, it is mainly focused on urban planning or urban design by generation planning which comes from authorities. For this reason, it is necessary to introduce a new concept of “urban mise-en-scène” in order to have a more sustainable urban regeneration. In order to build a human city, set as a stage in which five different human senses coexist, it is required to have a general direction for city planning. The person who harmonizes mise-en-scèce can be a metteur en scène, a director. A director plays three important roles. First of all, a director plays a role as an educator, as one who enables others to precisely understand and to analyze texts and then to correctly convey them to the audience. A director plays a role as an organizer. It is important for a director to organize many necessary resources, such as a stage planner, stage staff, actors and spectators to make one united team and to succeed in managing all of it. Lastly, a director plays a role as a creative producer. This is the capacity of a director and, at the same time, it is a function of synthesis. A director is required not only to display his outcomes, to show his originality and artistic traits, but also to have communication with stage workers and the audience. When these three functions, under the title of “direction”, are substituted into that of a city setting, the problems of urban regeneration can be overcome and a new potential can be obtained. The most difficult first step of urban regeneration consists of harmonizing and convincing the contrary relations of interest among urban residents. This isdefinitely different from the task of drawing on paper; that is to say, it is practical and participatory.
