국문 초록

본 고는 미국의 슈퍼히어로 캐릭터 중에서 슈퍼맨이나 스파이더맨에 못지않게 유명하고 인지도가 높은 배트맨을 검토해 보려 한다. 배트맨에 대해 일각에서는 미국 외의 사람들이 미국을 보는 것이라고 이야기 되어 왔기도 하다. 미국적 특색이 많은 배트맨은 미국의 주요 문화상품이지만 세계적인 주요 문화 상징물이다. 그간 배트맨은 TV 시리즈, 애니메이션, 영화 등으로 계속해서 리메이크 되어 왔으며 세계인들로부터 인지도를 높여 왔다. 배트맨이 이렇게 유명해 질 수 있었던 이유에는 캐릭터 자체에 철학적, 심리적 맥락의 혼합은 물론, 글로벌-로컬적 차원의 문화적 혼종이 용해되어져 있기 때문이다. 박쥐가 상징하고 있는 바가 배트맨의 특성에 모두 다 포함되어 있다. 또한 배트맨은 선과 악의 경계에서 악당들과 싸우며, 자기 통제를 가장 강력한 무기로 삼는 독특한 슈퍼히어로이기도 하다. 이중성과 모호성이 배트맨의 가장 주요한 부각점이기도 하다. 배트맨에게는 인간의 실존적 조건이 모두 들어있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 이러한 배트맨은 새로운 해석과 이해가 계속 거듭되면서 약 70여년간 세계 대중들로부터 큰 관심을 받았다. 미국 대중문화의 거의 모든 분야들을 자유자재로 넘나들고 있는 훌륭한 미국형 원소스 멀티유즈(One Source Multi-Use) 형태의 글로컬문화콘텐츠라고 할 수 있다. 본 고는 배트맨을 미국 문화코드, 성격과 이미지, 글로컬, 포스트모더니즘 등의 개념으로 분석하며, 미국적이지만 세계적인 캐릭터가 된 배트맨의 특성과 중요 요인 등을 살펴본다. 캐릭터 중심의 분석이 될 것이다. 또한 추가적으로 배트맨이 시대에 따라 변모한 면모를 확인해 보며, 21세기 포스트모더니즘 사회의 한 단면도 이해해 보고자 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper examines Batman, an American superhero character which is as famous as Superman or Spiderman. Batman is seen by some people as a window through which non-American people see America. Batman, which is very American, is not only an American cultural content but also a cultural content of the world. It has been remade into TV series, animations, and movies and has gained widespread awareness throughout the world. A major reason why Batman has become so famous is the fact that the character itself is both a mixture of philosophical and psychological contexts and a global-local cultural hybrid. The characteristics of Batman includes everything a bat symbolizes. Batman is also a very unique superhero, who fights against its enemies at the very boundary between good and evil and uses self-control as its chief weapon in the fights. Duality and ambiguity are two major characteristics of Batman. It can also be said that Batman has all the existential conditions of a human being. It has been 70 years since Batman was first created and has gained popularity by people around the world, during which new interpretations and understandings have always been made. Batman is an OSMU(one source multi-use) glocal cultural content, which freely crosses over almost all fields of American pop culture. This paper analyzes Batman by concepts such as American cultural codes, personality and imagery, glocality, and postmodernism. It examines characteristics and reasons for success of Batman as a superhero, not only for American people but also for people around the world. It is therefore an analysis mainly of character. Additionally, it illustrates how Batman has changed over time and explores a cross section of the postmodern society of the 21st century.
