국문 초록

멜랑콜리는 지난 수 백 년 동안 서구의 문화사를 이끌어 왔던 매우 중요한 개념이다. 인간의 가장 근원적인 정서를 표방하고 있다는 것은 그만큼 보편적일 수 있다는 뜻이다. 멜랑콜리는 최초 인간이 가지고 있는 가장 내밀하고 사적인 감정의 형태에서 사회가 공유할 수 있는 일종의 사회적 정서로 이해된다. 단순히 한 개인의 감정이나 정서를 표현하는 것에 그치지 않고, 어떤 사회적 사건이나 시대적인 조류 혹은 특정 시대의 세계감을 표현하는 매우 사회정치문화적인 개념이라고 할 수 있다. 멜랑콜리는 문화적으로 죽음과 시간의 문제와 매우 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 단순히 병리학적인 우울증의 의미와 별개로 멜랑콜리는 현대사회 전반에 대한 세계감의 재현으로 읽혀질 수 있다. 알브레흐트 뒤러의 「멜랑콜리아 I」에는 사회문화적인 많은 멜랑콜리의 도상이 표현되어 있는데, 그러한 상징적인 도상들은 이후 멜랑콜리와 멜랑콜리와 인접한 주제들, 특히 죽음의 춤, 바니타스, 시간과 같은 문화적 의미를 파악하는데 많은 단서를 제공하였다. 단순히 사회문화적인 세계감 이상으로서 멜랑콜리는 특히 현대세계와 문명속에 내재한 심리적 상실감과 우울을 살피는데 매우 중요한 역할을 차지하고 있으며 많은 예술작품들의 정신적 영감의 원천이 되고 있다. 특히 잉마르 베리만의 영화 <제 7의 봉인>은 이러한 죽음과 시간에 대한 인간의 멜랑콜리적 인식이 매우 잘 그려진 영화로 멜랑콜리가 가지고 있는 문화적 의미를 잘 표현해주고 있다. 인간의 심리와 내면의 문제가 더 중요해지는 현대사회에서 멜랑콜리라는 화두는 지난 시대를 비롯, 현대사회와 문명이 안고 있는 정서적 위기를 스스로 통찰하게 한다.

영문 초록

Melancholy is a very important concept that has led Western cultural history for the past hundred years. Melancholy is understood as a kind of social emotion that can now be seen in society as one of the most visceral and personal emotions. However, it is not just a mere expression of an individual’s feelings or emotions, but a very socio-political concept that expresses a certain socio-cultural significance such as death, dance of death, memento mori and time. Melancholy is culturally related to death and to time. Therefore, apart from the mere definition of pathological depression, melancholy can be read as a socio-cultural significance of the whole of modern society, where psychological issues are becoming prevalent. Melancholy also has a close connection to one of the heavenly bodies, Saturn for its iconological similarities. As a result, what is about melancholy is overlaid with what is about Saturn as well as time. Albrecht Dürer’s Melancolia I offers many iconographic images of melancholy, such as dance of death, memento mori, time and vanitas. As more than just socio-cultural atmosphere, melancholy plays a vital role in expressing and analyzing psychological loss and depression inherent in modern civilization, which has provided a source for a lot of artists and arts. Ingmar Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal is a good text where we can read the meanings of death and time in relation to melancholy. Nowhere else are human psychology and inner problems more important than the modern society, where problems of melancholy enable people to see the emotional crises of modern society and civilization.
