국문 초록

본 논문은 현대 미술에서 조형의 요소 중 하나인 선을 시각 언어로서 표현적 측면을 고찰하고, 공간이라는 표현영역의 확장을 통해 작품과 관람자의 상호적 측면을 살펴봄과 동시에 공간에서 나타나는 선의 조형성을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 선은 대상물을 재현하는 일반적인 표현수단이자 미술 분야에 있어 보조적인 역할을 해왔다. 그러나 새로운 시도와 사회적 움직임이 잦았던 19세기 말 20세기 현대 미술에서는 선이 재현의 수단이 아닌 ‘드로잉’이라는 독자적인 영역으로 분류되면서 그 범위가 확장되는 계기가 되었다. 더불어 실, 노끈, 철사 등과 같은 선적인 재료(Linear Material)의 사용을 시작하였고, 재료의 빈번한 활용은 작가의 의도와 관념을 직관적으로 나타내는 가장 자율적인 조형 요소이자 표현을 위한 역할을 하였다. 선은 실제로 움직이는 율동성은 없지만, 선이 이동하는 듯한 운동성을 느낄 수 있는 시각적인 효과를 주고 작가 내면의 감정에 따른 표현으로 무한한 변화의 가능성을 가지고 있다. 이처럼 선은 예술을 표현하는 수단이자 내면세계를 대변하는 하나의 결과물로 창조된다. 특히 전통적인 관습을 고수하였던 조각의 영역에서는 기존의 양식을 벗어나 선적인 재료의 사용 등을 통해 부드러운 물성의 발견, 유기적 형태의 표현 등 실험적인 조형예술 작품을 제시한다. 현대 미술에서의 공간은 ‘비어있다’라는 사전적인 공백의 개념보다는 폭넓게 물리적이고 정신적인 부분까지 포함하는 다중적인 의미가 있다. 이에 부합하여 작가들은 확장된 공간의 효율적인 표현 방법으로 ‘선’이라는 구성요소를 통해 공간의 크기를 자각할 수 있는 공간감을 나타냈다. 3차원의 선형 미술은 공간의 크기나 구조에 따라, 혹은 선의 물리적 속성에 따라 형태와 표현은 무한한 가변성을 지니게 되는 것이다. 공간에서의 선의 조형성은 중첩, 반복, 교차 등의 표현 방법에 따라 역동적인 리듬을 나타내기도 하고, 관람자의 시선을 분산시키기도 하며 가변적인 공간을 창출한다. 이러한 가변성은 작가가 구현하는 선이 조형 요소로서 표현의 범위가 넓혀졌다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 조형의 구성요소인 선이 가진 물리적 속성, 형태의 표현을 근간으로 하여 공간이라는 3차원적 영역의 확장과 시각적 측면을 중심으로 선의 조형성에 대한 새로운 패러다임을 모색하고 제시하는 데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper studies the expression aspect of the line which is an element of forms in modern art as a visual language, understands the mutual aspect to connect an artwork and an observer through the expansion of expression area to the space and analyzes the formativeness of the line that appears in a space at the same time. A line is a general expression method to describe an object. It has played a supportive role in artistic area. In the late 19th century and 20th century modern art in which they tried new attempts and there were a lot of social movements, the line is assorted as a unique area called ‘drawing’ not just a method of expression expanding the scope. They also started to use linear material. Using linear materials such as thread, string and wire made it possible to express the idea and concept of an artist intuitively and played the role of autonomous formative element. Line doesn’t move or dance actually. It plays a visual role so that people can feel that the line is moving. It is also a method of expression that can bring infinite change depending on the human feeling. Like this a line works as a method to express art and is created as a result that represents the inner world. Especially in the world of sculpture that kept the traditional custom, it breaks away from the existing type and suggests experimental formative art work such as the finding of soft characteristic and the expression of organic shape using linear materials. In modern art, the space has multiple meanings including physical and mental parts widely rather than the concept of ‘empty’ described in a dictionary. Artists expressed the feeling of space that can feel the size of a space expanded by a line. It means the demolition of two dimensional space for three dimensional space. Three dimensional linear art keeps infinite variety in its shape and expression depending on the size and structure of a space and the physical characteristics of a line. The structure of a line expresses dynamic rhythm with the overlap, repetition and crossing of lines and disperses attention at the same time. The other space that draws variety of human emotion and feeling was expanded to the formative element. It is significant that this study finds and suggests a new paradigm in the visual aspect for the formativeness of a line that is created from the expansion of three dimensional area of space with the basis of physical characteristic and the expression of form that a line, which is an element of a form, has.
