국문 초록

秋帆 權道溶(1877~1963)은 근현대시기를 살아간 유교지식인으로, 독립운동과 계몽운동, 교육활동을 펼쳤으며, 위암 장지연에 이어 제2대 경남일보 주필을 역임하였다. 손수 편찬한 『秋帆文苑』에는 경학, 성리학, 역사, 시무 등에 관한 다양한 글이 전해진다. 본고에서는 당대 유교지식인의 지형을 구체적으로 살피는 작업의 일환으로, 추범의 학문적 특징과 경세론을 검토하였다. 추범은 면우의 문하에서 퇴계학과 강우유맥의 학문적 전통을 이어받으면서, 공교운동의 사상적 기반이 되는 금문경학을 비판적으로 수용하였고, 서구 지식과 이론을 전통 유학의 논제들에 대응시키고자 하였다. 근대국가와 새로운 국제질서의 성립을 역사적으로 조망하면서, 독립을 이루기 위해 국력을 모을 것을 촉구하는 한편, 공교운동을 통해 유교복원의 길을 모색하였다. 시무와 실학에 대한 깊은 관심과 博學, 考證, 窮理의 학문적 태도는 그의 실리적･실천적 경세론에 영향을 끼쳤다. 하지만 1930-40년대에 전개된 추범의 경세론에는 시세론, 변통론, 천명론과 같은 전통 유교의 시각을 견지하였으며, 공화정을 이상적인 정치 체제로 인정하였으나, 그 연원을 당우 이전의 시기에서 찾았다. 지속적으로 전통 학문과 새로운 이론을 검토하며 의문점을 해명하고 유학의 방도를 모색한 것은, 쇠락해가는 중화질서와 새로운 국제질서 안에서 유학의 문화 문법과 정체성을 계승해나가기 위한 노력이었다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 공교운동은 실패로 돌아갔고, 전통 유학을 새로운 이론에 접목시키고 현실에 적용하려는 노력은, 주위의 비판과 논리적 한계에 봉착하게 되었다.

영문 초록

Chubeom Kwon Doyong (1877~1963) was a Confucian intellectual who lived in modern and contemporary period in Korea, leading independence movement, social enlightenment movement and educational activities and served as the second chief editor of Gyeongnam Ilbo after Wiam Jang Jiyeon. Chubeommunwon, the Collection of Chubeom’s Works published by himself, contains various writings regarding the study of Confucian classics, Neo-Confucianism, history and current affairs. In an effort to explore in detail the topology of Confucian intellectuals at that time, this paper examines his scholarly characteristics and his theory of governance. Following the scholarly traditions and characteristics of the Toegye School and Confucian scholar community in the eastern Gyeongsang region (east of the Nakdong River), Chubeom critically accommodated Keummunkyeonghak, the New Text Confucianism served as an ideological foundation for the Confucius Religion Movement, and examined western theories for grafting them onto traditional Confucian subjects. While experiencing national crisis of modern transition, he sought a new way to restore Confucianism through Confucius Religion Movement with historically overviewing the formation of modern state and new international order. His keen interest in current affairs and scholarly attitude based on erudition, historical research and deliberation was reflected in his pragmatic and practical theory of governance. His continuous efforts to examine traditional studies and new theories, to resolve questions, and to find a way for Confucianism were considered to inherit the identity of Confucianism within the current international orders and cultural grammar in the midst of declining Sinocentrism. However, Confucius Religion Movement failed in the end and his effort to integrate Confucian theories with the Movement faced criticism and logical limitations.
