‘風神’의 용례에 대한 一考

국문 초록

풍격용어인 ‘風神’은 明代 胡應麟(1551~1602)에 의해 주로 강조되었는데, 조선의 문인들도 ‘풍신’을 비평용어로 사용하기도 했다. 문학비평에서 ‘풍신’이란 용어의 정의는 확정짓기 어려운 점이 있다. 인상비평적인 요소가 너무 강하기 때문이다. 하지만 여러 사전류와 선행연구의 정의를 참고해서 ‘단순히 작품의 외적인 모습을 가리키는 경우’･‘문학 작품의 내적･외적인 요소가 잘 어우러진 상태를 가리키는 경우’, 그리고 ‘작가의 정신이나 기질이 작품 속으로 들어간 것을 가리키는 경우’ 등 몇 가지로 정리할 수 있었다. ‘풍신’의 정의에 대한 선행연구의 결과와 실제 시문평류 서적에 남아있는 ‘풍신’의 용례와의 상관관계를 파악하기 위해 사고전서 시문평류 서적에서 검색되는 ‘풍신’의 용례를 분석하고자 했지만, 대부분의 용례에서 앞뒤 문맥이 명확하지 않아 정확한 뜻을 파악하기 힘들었다. 하지만 호응린의 경우에는 구체적인 구절을 들어가며 풍신의 우열을 논평한 글이 몇 문장 있었고, 조선의 이익도 그러한 비평을 남긴 것이 두 건 있었다. 이 두 비평가의 비평문을 살펴본 결과, 호응린은 ‘문학 작품의 내적･외적인 요소가 잘 어우러진 상태’와 ‘작가의 정신이나 기질이 작품 속으로 들어간 것’ 등 두 가지 의미를 활용해서 비평을 했고, 이익은 ‘문학 작품의 내적･외적인 요소가 잘 어우러진 상태’만을 염두에 두고 비평하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

It is difficult to grasp the concrete meaning of Poongshin(風神), although it is a term that occupies an important position in the Hansi(漢詩) criticism. Eunglin Ho(胡應麟) often used the term ‘Poongshin(風神)’ in his book 『Sisu(詩藪)』, and he must mention the excitement in the words that emphasize the essence of the poem. Therefore, I thought that I could grasp the concrete meaning of Poongshin(風神) through this research. As a result of examining the meaning of the dictionary and the contents of the previous research, Poongshin(風神) was first used to evaluate the characters, and later it was expanded to the criticism term such as paintings and calligraphic works, poetry, and prose. However, since it is difficult to grasp the concrete meaning of Poongshin (風神), I have analyzed the detailed meaning of Poongshin(風神) based on the results of previous research and Eunglin Ho s evaluation of Poongshin(風神) through specific examples. As a result, I could infer that Poongshin(風神) was well expressed mean “the depiction of projecting human emotions onto poetic objects.” and “the mood of the whole work is in good condition”. We could see that these definition mean it was developed in the original meaning that Poongshin(風神) possessed, that is, the case where we were defining the appearance and personality of a person. Since then, I have examined the criticism by Ik Yi(李瀷), a representative critic of Joseon, using the term Poongshin(風神) about specific poetry verses. I could infer that Ik Yi(李瀷) understood Poongshin(風神) in relation to “the mood of the whole work” rather than “the depiction of projecting human emotions onto poetic objects.”
