교양-전공 연계교육 교과과정 개발을 위한 예비 고찰

국문 초록

이 논문은 한국의 대학들이 전문지식 교육에 지나치게 편중된 교육과정을 운영하고 있다는 문제의식과 이를 해결하기 위해서는 교양교육과 전공교육을 연계하는 교과과정을 개발해야 한다는 필요성에서 출발한다. 연구 목적은 한국의 대학에서 교양교육이 전공교육과 대등한 위상으로 고등교육의 사명과 역할 수행에 기여하도록 교양 교과과정을 개혁하기 위한 기반을 구축하는 것이다. 여기서는 교양 교과과정을 전 학년에 걸쳐 전체 학생을 대상으로 편성하여 전공교육과 병행할 수 있도록 개편해야 한다는 입장을 견지한다. 본격적인 모형을 개발하기에 앞서, 여기서는 선결 과제, 국내외 대학들의 교양교육 현황을 토대로 세 유형의 모형을 제안해 보았다. 교양교육의 현황을 보면, 교양교육의 목적이나 목표의 명시성이 비교적 부족하며, 여전히 분과학문 중심의 범주나 영역을 분류하고 있는 실정이다. 이에 비해, 외국에서는 교양교육의 목적과 목표 설정이 명문화되어 있으며, 범주나 영역의 분류에서 주제나 문제 중심으로 접근하는 것이 최근의 경향이다. 한국의 대학에서도 이러한 세계적인 흐름을 반영하여 대학의 고유한 특성을 살릴 수 있는 교양 교과과정의 개편 노력이 절실하다. 한국 대학에서 활용할 수 있는 교양-전공 연계교육을 위한 교양 교과과정의 모형을 기관형, 학부형, 절충형으로 제안해 보았다. 한국의 모든 대학에서 단일 교과과정 모델을 적용하기는 어렵기 때문에 다양한 모형을 개발하여 대학별 특성에 맞춰 변용할 수 있어야 할 것이다. 교양-전공 연계교육을 위한 교과과정 편성 및 운영에 앞서, 교양교육의 개념을 현대화하고 목표를 분명히 제시하여 중요성과 필요성에 대한 공감이 필요하다. 이와 더불어 각 대학 차원의 인식의 변화와 개혁 노력이 병행되어야 한다. 학생의 목표 능력을 바탕으로 하는 학습 성과 중심의 평가를 위한 시스템을 구축하여 개선을 위한 환류 장치를 확보해야 한다. 본 연구는 선행 연구나 사례와 관련한 자료의 충분성 측면에서 한계를 지니고 있으나, 모형 개발을 위한 담론 시도라는 측면에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 후속 연구를 통해 제안된 모형들의 문제점과 개선에 대한 경험 연구를 통해 근거를 확보하여 범용성이 높은 모형을 개발하는 작업이 지속되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study is conducted to build a basis for developing a curriculum model of General Education(GE) aligned with the education of specialized fields in korean colleges or universities. In order to carry out the aimful work, we need a critical assumption that such curricula be distributed in every semester or year and provide all students with the opportunity to attend the courses of GE alongside subject matters offered by the disciplinary fields. Before discussing the development of the curricula model, in this work some relevant issues are dealt with: the situation of GE in Korea and other countries, suggesting three types of curriculum model of GE, and problems which should be solved. Some comparable features are found regarding management of the GE in Korea and abroad. Firstly, while the purpose of GE is not given in many korean universities it is clearly stated in other countries especially in the american and japanese institutions. Secondly, the GE curricula in Korea are still categorized according to the academic fields, in contrast with the case of foreign colleges in which GE curricula are mainly classified reflecting the theme-based, task-based, or problem-solving education. With regard to the curricula model of GE, three samples are suggested for instance institutional, departmental, and eclectic form. In the institutional sample the categories are classified as core, foundation, depth, selective, and special division and sample subjects are distributed under the divisions respectively. As for faculty sample it is taken into consideration that all students can take part in the GE courses during all four years in company with the classes for major field. In the compromised sample a number of seminars are suggested under the blocks such as core, blended, the-based, merged etc. Regardless which sample become GE curriculum model, it should be the prerequisite to set appropriate purpose of GE to each institution, clear goals, and concrete objectives measurable the student learning outcomes and give them feedback to improve their developmental ability. Even though this work has limitation in terms of sufficiency regrading the analysed literatures, it could be envisioned as meaningful to give a basis for developing adequate models available in Korea. In order to produce such successful models, further empirical investigation should be continued.
