국문 초록

<독서와 표현>은 순천대학교 신입생들이 우리말로 된 학술적 텍스트를 이해하고 분석하는데 어려움이 많다는 점을 인식하고, 이를 개선하기 위한 방안으로 개설된 교과목이다. 본 연구는 <독서와 표현>의 수업 사례를 중심으로 그간 운영되어 온 <독서와 표현>의 성과와 문제점을 비판적으로 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 <독서와 표현>의 나아갈 방향과 개선 방안 등을 제시하고자 하였다. <독서와 표현>은 <독서와 생각하기>, <독서와 말하기>, <독서와 글쓰기> 세 교과로 세분화되어 있다. 텍스트를 정확하게 읽고 이를 분석하는 독서 능력 향상은 세 교과가 공통적으로 운영하였고, 표현 부분은 각 교과의 특장을 살려 차별화하여 운영하였다. <독서와 말하기>는 자신의 비판적 생각을 논리정연하게 말로 표현하는 능력을 배양하는 데 주안점을 두며, 발표와 토론을 적극 활용하였다. <독서와 글쓰기>는 자신의 생각을 글로 논리적으로 기술할 수 있는 능력을 향상시키고자 하였고, 이때 글쓰기 절차에 따른 단계별 글쓰기 과정을 활용하였다. <독서와 생각하기>는 발표와 토론, 글쓰기를 적절히 활용하였다. 수업이 진행될수록 많은 학생들이 읽기 능력이 향상되고, 읽기에 대한 어려움이 개선되는 모습을 보였고 이는 설문 조사의 내용이나 강의평가를 통해 확인할 수 있다. 그러나 <독서와 표현>은 아직도 개선되어야 할 점이 산재해 있다. 다양한 교수법의 개발, 교과목에 적합한 교재 마련, 세미나의 지속적인 개최 등 <독서와 표현>이 안고 있는 문제를 개선하기 위해 활발한 논의와 노력이 지속되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Since the first-year students of Sunchon National University are found to have difficulties in understanding and analyzing academic texts written in Korean, the “Reading and Expression” course was established to address this issue. This study aims to assess critically the outcomes and problems of the “Reading and Expression” course based on the course cases to date and thereby present ways of improving and exploring the future direction of the course. The “Reading and Expression” course consists of three subjects: “reading and thinking,” “reading and speaking,” and “reading and writing.” All these subjects focused on improving the ability to read and analyze texts. The ability to express was selectively reflected, depending on the characteristics of each subject. “Reading and speaking” concentrated on nurturing the ability of students to express one’s thoughts logically and clearly, mainly through presentations and discussions. “Reading and writing” helped students to describe their ideas in writings logically, using several stages of writing sessions. Finally, “reading and thinking” utilized presentations, discussions, and writing. As the course progressed, the reading ability of most of the students improved and their difficulties in reading decreased, both of which were verified through surveys and lecture evaluations. Nevertheless, the course “reading and expression” has a long way to go. Going forward, active discussions and steady efforts toward its further improvement, such as the development of diverse teaching methods, publication of textbooks suitable to each subject, and regular hosting of seminars, must take place.
