국문 초록

아직은 우리에게 생소한 용어인 ‘미디어 아키텍처(Media Architecture)’는 ‘미디어’라는 단어가 대변하고 있는 ‘디지털’ 기술을 건축에 도입한 것이다. 이는 단편적으로는 미디어와 건축물의 물리적 조합이라 이해할 수 있다. 하지만 미디어 아키텍처에 관한 연구는 단순히 미디어를 건축물에 활용한 것뿐만 아니라 건물 자체와 그 환경을 구성하는 기술적 연구를 모두 포괄한다. 따라서 미디어 아키텍처는 미디어의 구조적 특징을 담당하기도 하고 건축 구조물과 미디어아트가 결합한 형태를 띠기도 한다. 기존에 다루어진 미디어 아키텍처에 관한 연구에서는 주로 그 형식적 특징과 그것이 목표하는 기능을 설명하는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 하지만 본 연구는 미디어 아키텍처를 경험하는 데 있어 가장 큰 특징을 바로 ‘환영’을 통해 드러나는 ‘실재성’에 있다고 보았다. 또한, 그 환영과 실재성이 ‘미디어’가 주는 큰 효과이자 그것이 ‘아키텍처’와 합쳐졌을 때 새로운 의미를 파생한다는 측면에 주목하였다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 특징을 잘 보여주는 파블로 발부에나(Pablo Valbuena)의 작업을 살펴보며 발부에나의 작업이 미디어 아키텍처로 분류될 수 있는지의 가능성을 탐색해본다. 그리고 여기에 나타나는 환영과 실재성에 대해 분석해 본다.

영문 초록

The term “media architecture,” which is not familiar to us yet, is the introduction of the digital technology that the word media represents. In short, it can be understood as a physical combination of media and architecture. However, the study of media architecture is not only the application of media to buildings, but also encompasses the technical research that constitutes the architectural structure itself and its environment. Therefore, the media architecture is in charge of the structural features of the media and has a form in which media art is combined with architectural structures. Existing precedent researches on media architecture focus mainly on describing its formal features and the functions it targets. However, this paper aims to study that the most important feature of experiencing media architecture is its reality as manifested through illusion. Moreover it notes an aspect that “illusion” and “reality” are the effects of media and when it is combined with Architecture, which derives a new meaning. This study examines the work of Pablo Valbuena, which illustrates these characteristics, and explores the possibilities of whether the work of Valbuena can be classified as a media architecture. Furthermore, it will analyze the illusion and the reality in this case.
