노자(老子)의 교육적 사유에 관한 재검토

국문 초록

본고는 노자(老子) 도덕경(道德經)을 당대 사회 전반에 대한 대안 사상이 아니라 유가(儒家)에 대한 비판과 교육에 관한 모순을 지시하는 사유임을 부각한 논의이다. 춘추 전국시대의 제자백가(諸子百家)는 당시 사회의 혼란을 바로잡으려는 나름대로의 목표를 지니고 있었다. 특히, 유가는 ‘위정자 교육을 통한 사회변화’를 목표로 설정하고, 이를 달성하기 위해 이성과 합리성에 기초한 교육을 제시하였다. 이에 대해 노자는 사회 발전을 위한 다양한 노력이 오히려 사회 혼란을 가중하고 있다고 보고, 교육을 통해 사회를 변화시킬 수 있다는 믿음에 기초한 유가의 정치와 교육적 기획을 비판하였다. 대신, 비합리적 믿음을 기초로 하는 새로운 교육적 사유를 제기하였다. 이는 인위적 가치 지향을 강조하는 교육의 차원에서 볼 때 교육적 모순을 낳지만, 그 자체가 또 하나의 다른 교육적 가치를 지향한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to argue that Tao Te Ching of Laozi should be read as a critique of Confucianism and a paradox of education rather than an alternative to then the society. Thinkers of the Hundred Schools of Thought shared the goal of correcting the social turmoil of the time. Especially, Confucianism had set its purpose to bring about social change through educating the politician based on reason and rationality. However, Laozi believed that the Confucianistic efforts to lead society for the better were in fact aggravating the social unrest. Therefore Laozi tried to disillusion such a Confucianistic view on education, that is, the belief that education is a means of social change. Instead, Laozi proposed an educational idea, at the core of which lie irrational beliefs. Though his educational idea appears to be paradoxical, given the common notion that education involves getting students strive towards artificial values, it strives yet another educational value.
