『백학선전』에 나타난 <견우직녀> 설화의 수용양상과 의의

국문 초록

이 논문은『백학선전』이 <견우직녀> 설화에서 수용한 ‘만남-이별-만남’의 서사구조와 주인공들의 천상계 신분, 백학선의 오작교 대행, 칠월칠석과 임술년 팔월 오일 만남 등 소재적 수용 등에 대해 조망한 연구이다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, <견우직녀> 설화와『백학선전』의 서사구조와 인물 양상에 대해 살펴보았다.『백학선전』은 <견우직녀> 설화의 ‘만남-이별-만남’의 서사구조 안에서 다양한 사건의 전개와 인물 간의 갈등을 복합적으로 그려가면서 갈등 양상을 흥미진진하게 펼쳐나간다. 갈등의 양상은 악인형 인물들에 의해 펼쳐지고 있으며, 주인공은 조력자형 인물의 도움을 받아 갈등을 해소해 나간다. 하지만 주인공이 사건을 해결해나가는 과정에서 도인의 능력으로 초월적인 힘을 발휘하는 등 중세적인 방법을 벗어나지 못한 한계를 남겼다. 둘째,『백학선전』의 <견우직녀> 설화의 수용양상에 대해 살펴보았다.『백학선전』은 <견우직녀> 설화의 천상계 신분과 다양한 소재를 수용하였다. 천상의 동자였던 유백로와 은하수를 수놓는 시녀였던 조은하의 적강을 통해 <견우직녀> 설화의 천상계 신분을 수용하고 있으며, 백로라는 주인공의 작명을 통해 인물의 고귀함을 드러냈다. 그뿐만 아니라 견우와 직녀가 일 년에 한 번 오작교에서 만나는 날인 음력 칠석을 양력의 형식을 빌려 차별화를 두었다. 이러한 변용은 『백학선전』이 근대를 향해가는 시대 상황을 적극적으로 반영한 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 셋째, 수용양상을 통해 본 문학사적 의의에 대해 조망해 보았다.『백학선전』은 <견우직녀> 설화의 서사구조와 소재를 수용했지만, 작품의 내용에 한국인의 정서와 가치관을 독자 적으로 표현하였다. 백학이라는 소재를 적절히 변용하여 한국인의 고귀함과 절개, 지조를 상징적으로 드러냈을 뿐만 아니라, 여성을 영웅화하여 주체적인 여성상을 확립함으로써 근대의식을 지향하였다. 무엇보다 조선후기 외국인이 『백학선전』을 텍스트로 한국의 명절인 칠석을 소개하기 위해 번역한 작품이라는 점에서 문학사적으로 그 의의가 크다 하겠다.

영문 초록

This paper is to explore the narrative structure of ‘meeting-separation-meeting’ embodied in 『Baekhakseonjeon』 that is represented in folk tale, the main characters of celestial status, the Baekhakseon which acts as the Ojakgyo, and the meeting on July 7th in the lunar calendar and on August 15th in the Year of the Dog. The summary is as follows. First, it reviews the narrative structure and the characters of folk tale and『Baekhakseonjeon』. 『Baekhakseonjeon』 unfolds complex developments of varied events and conflicts between characters in an exciting way within the narrative structure of folk tale, which is ‘meeting-separation-meeting’. The aspect of conflicts is shown by villain characters, and the main characters resolve conflicts with the aid of helpers. However, that the main character shows the transcendental power with the help of the ascetic figure in solving the case doesn’t go beyond the limitation of medieval way. Second, it discovers how 『Baekhakseonjeon』 accepts folk tale in its story. Baekhakseonjeon represents the celestial status through Yu Baekro and Cho Eunha who were a child in Heaven and a young maid embroidering the Milky Way respectively and had to be born as humans, and this classical novel also shows the nobility of the hero by naming him Baekro meaning a white heron. Besides, it makes a differentiation by presenting July 7th in the lunar calendar, the day when Gyun-woo and Jin-nyuh meet on Ojakgyo once a year, in the solar calendar. This alternation of 『Baekhakseonjeon』can be interpreted as its active reflection of the times heading for the modern era. Third, it presents the literary significance based on how the classical novel accepts the folk tale. 『Baekhakseonjeon』accepts the narrative structure and the story element of folk tale, but it has literary significance in terms of its own expression of Korean sentiments and values through its story. This classical novel not only shows consistency and integrity of Koreans, but also symbolically exposes the aspects of nobility, fidelity and belief, by properly changing the material that is Baekhak. Furthermore, this leaves great significance in the literary history in terms of pursuing modern consciousness by establishing an independent image of woman through making a female hero.
