18세기 人物志 형식 筆記의 출현배경 연구

국문 초록

이 논문은 견문을 자유롭게 기록하는 방식으로 작성된 필기 양식 내에서 18세기 후반에 인물중심 기록으로 특화된 필기가 새로이 출현하게 된 배경 및 그 의의를 人物傳記集과 筆記의 전통 속에서 규명해 보고자 하는 의도에서 살펴본 것이다. 조선 중기 임진왜란과 병자호란을 기점으로 200여년이 경과한 즈음, 그간 걸출한 인물들이 새로이 쏟아져 나오면서 17~8세기 역사와 인물에 대한 품평 및 정리에 관한 요구가 자연스럽게 확산되었다. 또한 조선 후기로 접어들면서 필기는 점차 분화되고 전문화되어지며 총집화 되어갔다. 이처럼 필기가 점차 분화·전문화되어가는 현상과 인물에 대한 정리를 필요로 하는 시대적 요구가 결합하여 18세기 후반에 인물지 형식의 필기가 새로이 출현하게 되는데,「左溪裒譚」및「幷世才彦錄」과 같은 인물지 형식의 필기가 바로 그것이다. 전근대 우리나라의 인물전기 총집(모음집)은 삼국사기· 열전이나 고려사 · 열전과 같이 국가적 차원에서 史家에 의해서 기록되다가, 조선 후기에 오면 ‘人物考’ 등과 같이 碑誌傳狀의 선별 또는 집성으로 이루어졌다. 이에 비해 18세기 후반에 출현한 필기류 ‘인물지’는 개인의 창작으로 이루어진다. 즉 「좌계부담」과 「병세재언록」은 외부적 요청이나 형식적 제약 없이 저자의 자발적 의도가 구체적인 창작 동기가 되었고, 입전인물의 선별과 입전방식에 있어서도 저자의 개인적 식견과 역량이 발휘되었으며, 내용면에서 일화와 시화적 내용을 많이 내포하고 있다는 점 등에서 필기의 성격을 선명하게 보여준다. 특히 이 두 인물지 형식의 필기 저작은 당시의 병세적 인식 및 인간에 대한 관심의 확산과 연관이 있으며, 이후 여항인의 전기집을 비롯해서 다양한 인물지 필기의 저술로 계승된다는 점에서 중요한 의의를 갖는다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the background and significance of the Pilgi specializing in character centering in the end of the 18th century in the tradition of the Figures biographies and Pilgi. In the mid-Joseon Dynasty, a number of figures appeared in the 200 years since the Imjin War and Manchu invasion. Thus, the demand for comment and order on the history and characters of the 17th and 18th centuries spread naturally. Also, in the 18th century, writing became increasingly differentiated, specialized, and integrated. In the second half of the 18th century, the writing style of the character style such as Jwagyebudam and Byungsejaeunrok was newly emerged due to the demands of the times that need to sort out the aspects of becoming differentiated and specialized in writing history and the arrangement of the characters. This was related to the contemporary and egalitarian perceptions of the time, and influenced the emergence of commoner’s biography. In the premodern period, the collections of the Korean figures’ biographies were recorded by historians at the state level such as Samguksagi and Goryeosa biographies. When it comes to the late Joseon Dynasty, they were sorted or collected as a Bijijeonjang(碑誌傳狀) such as “Inmulgo(人物考)”. Compared to this, a kind of writing, Character’s journal(人物志) appeared in a personal creation in the latter half of the 18th century, It was built by authors voluntary motivation without external demands or formal constraints. It was written according to the viewpoint of the authors thoroughly in the selection of recorded persons and the manner of recording. This means that it is a free recording style of writing. It also shows the character of writing more clearly in that it contains a lot of anecdotes and poetic contents in terms of contents.
