국문 초록

기호지역을 관통하는 남한강은 그 굽이만큼이나 숱한 문학적 심상을 지니고 있다. 단양의 나루에서 남한강은 소금을 싣고 와서 주모를 부르는 <소금배 소리>로 왁자지껄 한 심상을 드러내지만, 청풍에서는 옥소(玉所)의 <황강구곡가(黃江九曲歌)>로 인해 유유자적함과 달관의 심상을 간직하고 흐른다. 달천과 마주치는 탄금대에서는 두 편의 <달천몽유록(達川 夢遊錄)>을 통해 남한강은 임진왜란 최대 격전지인 달천전투 패배의 기억과 수많은 군사들의 죽음이라는 상처로 고통스럽고 어두운 심상을 드러낸다. 그리고 남한강 최대의 나루 인목계나루에서는 많은 물동량으로 인해 수많은 사람들이 모여들어 활기차게 장시를 이루지만 아전들의 탐학과 토색질로 민중들의 삶은 고달프게 이어지며 한을 드러낸다. 김종직의 <가흥참(可興站)>과 신경림의 <목계장터>가 이러한 심상을 형상화 하고 있다. 남한강은 소리 없이 흐르지만 그 굽이마다 이렇게 많은 사연과 문학적 심상을 간직하고 있는 것이다. 이런 남한강의 심상은 바로 지역성과 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 지역성이란 그 지역민들의 구체적 삶의 형상과 기제인 바, <소금배 소리>는 단양 나루터의 주막에서 벌어지는 민중들의 활기찬 삶과 연결되고, <황강구곡가>는 청풍의 한적한 자연을 거론 하며, 두 편의 <달천몽유록>은 임진왜란의 상흔을 기억하며, <가흥참>은 목계나루에서 자행되는 수탈의 실상을 보여준다. 지역민들의 삶이 이루어지는 곳이 지역의 터전이고, 문학은 바로 그곳을 통해 지역민의 삶을 형상화했기 때문이다. 도도히 흐르는 남한강은 이렇게 호서지역의 단양, 청풍, 달천, 목계를 거치면서 지역민들의 진솔한 삶을 작품에 담아내고 또 그것으로 인해 자연물로서 강이 아닌 문학적 심상을 획득하게 된 것이다.

영문 초록

The Namhan River, passing through the central Kiho Region, has as many images as its winding curves. At the Danyang ferry, the river delivers clamorous images represented by the voice of calling a barmaid in . In Cheongpung, the river flows unhurriedly and yet eloquently to give a philosophical image as expressed in Okso s . At Tankeumdae, which leads to Dalcheon, the river conveys the dark images in the two works of by portraying the deaths of many soldiers engaged in the most fierce battle during the 1592 s Japanese invasion. Mokgye Ferry is the biggest ferry along the Namhan River. Although the ferry was a busy transportational site attracting the great quantity of goods, the ordinary people were to experience great hardship caused by the greed and extortion of the local officials. This kind of image is well expressed in Kim Jong-jik s and Shin Kyung-Rim s . The Namhan River continues to flow silently and yet it keeps many different stories and literary images. Those images are closely related to the locality of the river. Since locality serves as the basis of providing the real images of local people, it is impossible to separate the idea of locality in understanding any literatures of such kinds. Therefore, cannot be separated from the bar at the Danyang ferry, and Okso s cannot be set apart from the Hwangkang of Chengpung. Likewise, the two works of cannot be disconnected from Dalcheon and Tankeumdae. These places provide the foundation of the local people, and it is quite natural for those literary works to portray the images of the local residents. Flowing with a rush through Danyang, Cheongpung, Dalcheon, and Mokgye in the region of Kiho, the Namhan River successfully represents the real life of the residents and also acquires its literary image.
