국문 초록

이 논문은 간재 전우의 독논어를 분석하여 그의 경학을 살펴보기 위한 글이다. 연구자의 주석 분석 방법은 기본적으로 간재의 경전연구 방법을 인정하며, 가능한 그의 경학자적 측면의 관점을 견지하였다. 또한 주석을 명확하게 살펴보기 위해 분장 · 분절의 방법으로 정치하게 분석하였다. 이 방법은 ‘경전의 本意와 전체의 의미를 정밀하게 파악하는데 필요한 연구’이다. 따라서 분장 · 분절을 통해 ｢독논어｣의 ‘어느 장⋅절에 특히 주석을 정밀하게 해석하고 있는가’를 파악할 수 있다. 그리고 그것이 본래 경전의 본의를 제시한 것인가를 살필 수 있을 것이다. 간재는 性卽理 · 心卽氣를 입론으로 理無爲 · 氣有爲를 견지하며 심성 · 이기관계를 개진한다. 그는 ‘성에 근본하여 氣를 주재하는 것을 심’이라 하고, ‘심은 기보다 영험 하지만 성보다는 거칠다’고 하며, ‘심을 구성하고 있는 기를 청탁수박이 혼재하는 일반적인 기질과 다른 차별적인 것으로 이해’하고 있다. 간재는 주자와 율곡이라 하더라도 엄정한 태도로 비판하고 있다. 이것은 경전의 본의를 탐구하며 자기학설 이론의 근거를 확보하기 위한 신중한 태도라고 보여 진다. 그는 논어 책을 폈을때 첫 글자 ‘學’자를 ‘學性’으로 해석하며 ‘四書’를 인용하여 ‘四書學’은 모두 ‘學性’임을 자세히 주석하고 있다. 성현의 말이 ‘性’자를 버리면 ‘學’이라고 이를 것이 없다고 하면서 간재는 공맹유학의 종지가 ‘宗性’에 있음을 명확히 제시하고 있는 것이다. 따라서 ‘心이 나의 性을 근본하고’, ‘心이 나의 性을 배우고’, ‘性으로서 스승을 삼고 마음은 제자가 되고’, ‘聖門이 하늘에 근본한 학문임’을 찾아 제시하고 있다. 이러한 것이 간재가 ‘주자학적 경학’으로서 경전을 탐구하여 얻은 微言大義라고 할 수 있다. 또한 간재에게 있어서는 유학의 종지에 대한 해석을 달리하는 宗心論을 비판할 뿐만 아니라 이단 비판의 원리로 宗性論을 엄정하게 제시한 것이라고 파악할 수있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes Ganjae Jeon Woo’s Dok Non Eo and reviews his study of the Confucian classics. Essentially, the analysis method used in this study is to accept Ganjae’s approach to annotating the Confucian classics, with the primary focus being on his aspect as a commentator. In order to provide a sophisticated analysis, this study divides Dok Non Eo into chapters and section that clearly follows the characteristics of Ganjae’s annotations. This method is necessary to precisely reveal the original intentions of the classic manuscript and the overall meanings of his annotations. Accordingly, as the chapter/section scheme is applied to Dok Non Eo, it becomes clear in which chapter/section Ganjae’s annotations and analysis are the most sophisticated. Moreover, it also enables us to see whether his annotation and analysis reveals the original intention of the classic manuscript. From the perspective of “the nature is the principle (性卽理)” and “the mind is the energy flow (心卽氣),” Ganjae puts forth his arguments regarding the relationships between human mind, nature, Li, and Ki by advocating “Li has no action (理無爲)” and “Ki has an action (氣有 爲).” He points out that the human mind presides over Ki on the basis of the nature. Thus, the human mind is more spiritual than Ki, but harsher than the nature. In this regard, Ganjae distinguishes Ki, which constitutes human mind, from temperament, which contains a mixture of good and evil. Even Zhu Xi and Yul Gok do not escape Ganjae’s impartial criticism. This is consistent with Ganjae’s cautious approach to set the foundation of his own theory through annotations on the Confucian classics. He interprets the first character “Hak (學)” of Non Eo as “Hakseong (學性)” and adds precise annotations arguing that “Saseohak” is all “Hakseong” by quoting the Four Books (四書). By citing the philosopher’s adage that “Hak” does not exist without nature (性), Ganjae clearly argues that the noble spirit of Confucianism is the noble nature (宗性). Accordingly, Mind should be based on the nature (心本性), Mind learns the nature (心學性), Nature is a teacher and human mind is its disciple (性師心弟), Consequently, Seongmoon (聖門) is the study that is based on the heavens. This has an unrevealed, deeper meaning (微言大義) that Ganjae understands by studying the Confucian classics as a commentator. In this regard, Ganjae criticizes the theory of the noble mind (宗心論), which leads him to understand the noble spirit of Confucianism differently, and propose the theory of noble nature (宗性論) as the principle for criticizing heretical views.
