야담을 통해 본 질병과 의원, 그 시선과 의미

국문 초록

동아시아에서 의학은 인(仁)을 실천하는 방법의 하나로 인식되어 왔다. 유학자들도 의학을 부정하지 않았다. 그런데 ‘백성을 사랑하고 타자를 아낀다’는 표어와 달리 의원을 보는 시선이 곱지 않다. 이 글은 야담을 통해 조선시대 질병과 의원에 대한 시선을 확인하고, 그를 통해 당시 인민이 꿈꾸던 의원에 대한 원망(願望)을 읽어내 려는 데에 목적을 두었다. 전근대 의료행위는 의원과 무당을 동일시하였다. 당시 사람들은 병의 원인이 몸 내부의 부조화가 아닌 몸 외부의 힘에서 온다고 생각했고, 그 힘을 꺾는 행위가 무당 이나 의사가 다르지 않다고 보았기 때문이다. 병의 원인과 치유법을 우의적으로 담은 하버드대본 파수를 통해서도 그 점을 확인할 수 있다. 그런데 임진왜란 이후 에는 ‘개인이 아닌 집단의 상처는 누가 치료할 수 있는가?’라는 질문이 제기된다. 야담에서는 이 물음에 이인(異人)을 제시해 놓았다. 17세기 이후 정렴, 박엽, 서거정을 비롯한 다수의 이인들이 야담에 등장하게 된 이유도 여기에 있다. 17세기 이전에는 의원이 서울에만 집중되어 있었고, 지방에는 거의 없었다. 그랬기 때문에 의원은 문학 작품의 배경으로만 존재할 뿐이었다. 의원이 문학 전면에 등장한 시점은 17세기 이후다. 17세기 이후로 의약이 상업화되면서 지방에서도 다수의 의원이 양성된 까닭이다. 의료의 상업화는 이익에 휘둘리는 의원들을 생겨나게 했고, 그런 풍조를 야담은 조롱한다. 그와 반대로 신통한 의술을 보인 의원들도 주목 하는데, 숙종을 치료한 유상(柳瑺)이 대표적인 의원이다. 야담에서는 그를 의술을 칭찬하면서도, 다른 한편에서는 임금을 치료하느라 가난한 백성은 죽게 만든 일화도 제시한다. 임금과 백성의 생명을 같은 선상에 두고 유상의 선택에 대한 판단을 독자들에게 묻는다. 마지막으로 백성의 편에 서서 의료 행위를 했던 조광일(趙光一) 을 통해서는 가난한 백성의 목숨도 계속되어야 할 삶이라는 점을 부각한다. 재력이 사람을 죽이고 살리는 도구가 되어서는 안 된다. 야담은 그것이 바로 인의 실천임을 말한다.

영문 초록

In East Asia, medicine has been recognized as a way to practice love. Nor did Confucian scholars deny medicine. However, unlike the slogan, Love the people and care about the batter , the gaze on the doctor is not good. This paper confirms how the gaze of the disease and doctor of the Joseon Dynasty was through Yadam, and aims to get a glimpse of the expectation horizon of the doctors that the people dreamed of at that time. In the pre-modern times, doctors and shamans were no different. The word medical[醫] also depicts a situation in which shaman treated patients with shamanism. At that time, people thought that the cause of the illness was not the incongruity within the body but in the power outside the body, and that the act of breaking the power was not different from the shaman or the doctor. We can confirm it through the Harvard version Pasurok(罷睡錄) describing the cause and the cure of the disease figuratively. After Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Qing invasion of Joseon in 1636, however, a new question is asked, “Who can heal wounds of non-individual groups?” In Yadam, ‘A man of unusual ability[異人]’ appeared in this question. This is why SeoGeoJung and others have appeared in the Yadam since the 17th century. Prior to the 17th century, doctors were concentrated in Seoul. There were few doctors in the province. That is why doctors exist only in the background of literary works. Doctors appeared in the literature front after the 17th century, because since the commercialization of medicines since the 17th century, a large number of doctors have been cultivated in the provinces. The commercialization of medical care also caused doctors to make profits, and Yadam mocks those. Also, doctors who have shown great medical skills are paying attention. Dr. YuSang, who treated King Sukjong, is one of the most famous figures. While Yadam praised him for medicine, it also suggested that poor people died in the treatment of wages. Put the wage and the life of the people on the same line and ask the readers to judge the choice of Dr. YuSang. Finally, through ChoKwangIl, who had performed medical activities on the side of the people, he emphasized that the life of the poor people should be continued. Money should not be a tool for killing and saving people. Yadam says that is the practice of love.
