국문 초록

본고는 일제강점기에 아리랑을 민중적 관점에서 논의한 학술담론의 현황과 주된 논점에 대해 정리하고 분석하였다. 일제강점기 아리랑에 대한 연구는 주로 아리랑이 민족의 노래로 호명되고 격상되는 과정에 집중되어 있었다. 그래서 아리랑을 본격적인 탐구의 대상으로 삼고 이에 대한 독자적인 논의를 펼친 민중적 시각은 오히려 간과되는 측면이 있었다. 본고는 아리랑을 민중적 관점에서 다룬 학술적 담론을 주목함으로써 아리랑이 지닌 저항의 실제적인 맥락을 확인하였다. 김동환, 김재철, 김태준, 고정옥의 논의가 대표적이다. 특히 김재철과 김태준, 고정옥은 아리랑을 독립적인 장을 통해 논의하였고, 그 정체성에 대한 집중적인 논의를 진행하기도 했다. 이들은 민중적 관점에서 아리랑을 조망함으로써 아리랑의 참요적 성격과 풍자성을 확인해 내었고, 식민지 조선의 현실을 보여주려 했으며, 아리랑이 현재를 담을 수 있는 노래가 되어야 함을 주장하였다. 그러면서 독립군아리랑이나 민요시 창작의 이론적 기반을 제공하고 있었다. 이는 아리랑에서 조선의 정서와 심미적 신비성을 확인하려는 담론과는 차별성을 지니고 있으며, 향토성에 기반을 둔 복원의 대상으로 보는 민요인식과 도 거리를 두고 있다는 점에서 의미가 있다고 본다.

영문 초록

This paper reviews and anlayzes the situation and the main issues of academic discussions about Arirang, which were made from the popular point of view during the Japanese Colonial era. The majority of the existing studies on Arirang during the Japanese colonial occupation focused on the historical process in which Arirang was called a representative Korean folksong and given an iconic status representing the Korean People. For this reason, the popular point of view, from which Arirang was seriously studied and an independent research trend was formed, has not received due attention. This paper deals with the academic discourses on Arirang developed from the popular point of view in order to identify real resistant contexts implied by Arirang. Those who analyzed Arirang from the popular point of view revealed its prophetic and satirical characteristics and pointed out that Arirang conveyed the reality of the colonial Chosun and thus could represent the contemporary time. In this regard, a theoretical foundation for creating an Arirang of the army for national independence and folk lyrics was provided. This trend is significant in its difference from the other trends by which Arirang carries the sentiment of Chosun and aesthetic mysticism or is a folksong that needs to be restored base on folk culture. However, the discussions based on the popular viewpoint did not fully reflect or lead the practice and enjoyment of Arirang in real life. These limitations should also be noted.
